In other words,Bruce Meyer's Doane Spencer roadster is not the original car because someone else restored it? Bullshit. The So-Cal '34 Bonneville car is not the same because Don Orosco restored it? How about Bill Niekamp's roadster,Dick Flint's 29 roadster,The Chrisman Brothers coupe,The Pierson brothers coupe,Frank Macks 27 roadster,Ed Roth's outlaw, Bill Couches 34 coupe??????? fake fake fake fake fake fake fake???Old Alex Xydias is too Damned old to remember his name ,let alone restore his belly tanker or 34 Bonneville car. Most of these old cars were built in the 40's and 50's and the original builders are dead! Have another hit!!?? You wouldn't know a true hot rod if it ran over you......MY BUDDY HAD A HEART TRANSPLANT. DOES THAT MAKE HIM SOMEONE ELSE???

Did it quit being the R&C Dream Truck when the R&C Staff changed the colors at least 3 times. I have always been nuts about that truck and I am a dyed in the wool BLUE OVAL FANATIC.

Kurt owns the ORIGINAL truck. different engine cause R&C sold original off after the crash and it could not be located.
That truck received the FIRST DAMN (excuse my french) small block brandX swap.

I liked the Dream Truck when it was still in 2-tone primer, before the fins and finish paint were done (last picture in Mazdaslam's post).

In my opinion, most times that a custom is re-done to "freshen" it for another round on the show circuit (whether by the original builder, or a subsequent owner), it is ruined: Grabowski, Larry Ernst, Ron Dunn, Chuck Porter, many more. The Dream Truck may have been showiest in it's final pre-crash form, but it had lost the subtlety that it had earlier.

Now this is a bitchen version of the original idea started by Sam Gates Automotive in Pasadena on Chester & Green Streets. I liked it before Spence had Bob Metz do the fin thing to it.
Bruce Glasscock bought the carcass of the truck with a a crude repair job of the bashed in fender & driver door, Carl Green started the resto (with a parts truck=frame was replaced along with parts of the cab) in like 77-78 and it was finished and was featured in a magazine sometime in 79 (@ an A&W Drive-In).
Kurt ended up redoing some of the loose resto to give it the exact look when it was originally painted white. It was on display The Oakland Museum in the late 90's along with the Hirohata Merc as well as many more bitchen cars from the past.
Still one of my faves though;)

An interesting historical note is the Barris crests used on a primered truck- I don't remember ever seeing that before. Usually the crests were the finishing touch after paint.

Also I like that the gold clone so far as it does not have the "dirty diaper" rear grille like the original step side version. That element just didin't make sense until the finned version of the bed. It's been white so long (in it's restored state) I would love to see one in the gold & purple or the early light purple color. I just associate that white version too much with the KKOA days of the '80s.

Great Shots of this truck in gold :D
    Thanx 4 sharing ;)

  11. This is the correct story of the restoration and I am glad to hear Bruce Glasscock and Carl Green get some credit for bringing this truck back. They sure didn't get any credit on the Wrestler's TV show. Neil Emory of Valley Custom was consulted during that rebuild to make sure eveything was correct. This is the same physical truck that was the original, ask Spence!

So if I understand this correctly, everytime I fix or change something on my old truck, I have a new truck and the old one is gone. Wow sometimes I get a new truck several times in one day.

Back to your original question. Here is a link to my friend Sumners site http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/underconstruction/underconstruction1.html This shows the build up of his truck. It is not in anyway a clone of the dream truck but it does have some of the same lines. He researched the dream truck when he began the build and he used some of the same ideas. I thought the construction photos might help you.

  22. I cannot believe someone would say this! Alex Xydias continues to this day to be involved in the hobby and business. Many of us from the forties and fifites are still doing fine in the hobby. We ask the veterans of this hobby to come and share their thoughts and memories and then someone treats them like this. This is totally rude and insensitive and I for one want the older guys and gals to know that I appreciate the legacy that they have brought to the hobby. Dignity and respect is due and owed. I watched as a brave Dick Clark last night, fought back with all his heart, to overcome what has happened to him. Nothing from our era would have been the same without him. The march of time happens to us all, even the rude and insensitive among us will someday have to give in to the march of time. I am proud to have been a part of the forties and fifties and respect the legacies that have been left to us..

The original was burned to the ground in a shop fire of suspicious origin years ago. I remember the shots in R&C from years ago , Damned shame !

Damn we have a group of newbies that love to fight over anything...scrappy. I've talked with Kurt McCormick about his collection of up until now restored and soon to be restored historic original cars. Seemed like a guy that would know an original rough car from a later copy.
