I can't take it any more....the clacking in the worn stock 21 stud cam has to go and pronto. Not to mention the "sound of silence" exhaust note. Although she drove kinda OK, its time to do it right. So off goes the PM7 to a fellow Hambers home and apart she comes. Upon teardown I can see the 21 stud has had a rebuild sometime in the recent past. I think they reused the stock cam which has excessive lifter clearance which was causing the valvetrain to be noisy. She is .020" 0ver, has domes pistons, solid guides, straight stemmed SS exh valves and the Ford intakes. The stock 37 21 stud heads are fitted. The changes: I unshrouded valve chambers to gasket line from the valves midpoint and up. and had .050" shaved off the heads. Dave @ Cam Techniques reground me a cam to suit a mild 21 stud before they closed up shop - .335" lift, 228 @.050 and am adding liteweight hollow adjustables. After giving up for now on finding a decent HC mag for a respectable price, I have modded a helmet dist which I will use and removed the trailing point set to use the primary points to trigger a hidden MSD box for some fire (done it before with great results). Adding new wires and 2 fresh 2 x 97s, an Edelbrock slingshot Intake that I modded with a hidden PCV setup underneath the intake. I'm sure it'll wake her up a tad till she gets some more gow down the track.....it will sound nicer too. The patient.... The cure...... And away we go....
This is awesome! Love seeing the late 21 stud engines being used. Have one lined up for my Roadster and will be running an Edelbrock Super Dual with two 94's and polished original Canadian alloy heads. They are definitely not something you see every day. Not that we see many Flatheads at all over here.. but those engines even less.
Australian peach slices, Greek style yoghurt and Vegemite... you're OK. And the flatty looks like it will be some fun too! That's a clean fuel hook up.
The engine ran clean and nice with the stock jets and the PM7 - I can't remember the PV size, its been a while. I like to run a hotter plug to keep em clean on the crap they call fuel these days and the PCV has taken care of fumes and makes it a cleaner runner. It does'nt run rich setup like this. We'll see how we go with the Slingshot - it may/may not need a tweak on the jet sizing.
Killer Frank, can't wait to hear a rumble out of those pipes, any updates from the weekend. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I have two 97's on a Harrell high rise, this on a 21 stud with a mild Clay Smith cam. Have been changing jets to clear the plugs of soot. The 97 standard factory set up for one Carb is 45M & 65PV. I started at 43M & 69PV, then went to 42M & 69, just changed to 42M & 70PV. Good Luck Your car is beautiful. is beautiful!
Thanx....I love those Harrells & the Meyer heads I'll check again but pretty sure its 45 jets. I'll start with these as the baseline then tweak from there but with the PM7/less CR I never fouled the hotter plugs with the stock rebuilt helmet dist. I imagine with the MSD ign and the same dist firing the box it won't be any worse if anything cleaner. What remains to be seen is the quality of distribution to the cyls as compared to the PM7 which was a little inconsistent. Thommo I should have the heads in a day or two then it'll be reassembly time. I'll keep the thread updated....
Really like to know how you go with the slingshot setup. I was considering it myself for my 37 but a little unsure if its worth it ( for me) Im worried about losing bottom end - mid range power and vacuum. I use my truck almost daily, so needs to be user friendly and about to fit power brakes so I need vacuum .
Awesome car! Any more pics of the three window next to it? Looks real cool! And that Harrell slingshot with Eddie Meyer heads is absolutely beautiful!
I'm very interested in doing the same to my 21 stud .. I would like to see that PCV valve setup.. I'm sick of the fumes Posted while using the john
thats perfect! then you just run that hose into the oil fill tube? ill be building this next week for sure!
No the hose end sits in the valley and the fumes are drawn thru the PCV into the intake then burned. Cured my fumes One more....
Do you have a part number for the PCV? Do you need to run the end of the hose up close to the front of the intake so it won't suck up oil sprayed around?
All cool stuff . . . love it! Do I remember correctly that you're coming over to see us Yanks this summer at Bonneville? Sure as hell hope so - I think we need to throw a few oil cans down our necks! Not only that, the FlatCad crew could use a few crew members from OZ for Fxxx sake. Cheers Mate! B&S
Fingers Xd Dale - will be talking to a mate (Jimbob) who's planing the same. Ill have a better idea in a few weeks mate !! Re the gear, Ive had real good luck with NOS gears - the new/repro ones I hear are crap. The one I took out of this engine looked mint and it was beaten on for years
RM the hose is not really required, I just put a short length on the end of the PCV to get it closer to the end of the valley, it s still in the valley/under the intake.
me and my brother, who also runs a 21 stud, were talking about this setup over the weekend.. my question is, wont this lean the carb way out by adding extra air into the intake runners? normally the PCV valve hooked to the large vac port on the back of a carb so it only draws vac when the throttle is open, with these fittings in the intake runners, wont it let them draw air all the time?
