Ted Cyr, in the Cyr and Hopper "Ole Blue" at Lions. The unblown single-engined version of this car won the NHRA Nationals ('58, I think), when Cyr broke his TE-440 with the blown motor. They had towed this car to the Nationals to sell it, but after it won, Ted dropped two blown Chyslers into it and ran it briefly. Handling problems? "Drove like a Powerglide Chevy," was his answer.

Dick Belfati's "Shadow," Fuller car, if I remember right. Like many fuel drivers of that time, Dick paid the price for fuel dragster racing, bad burns on his legs, so understandably put other drivers in the seat. Don't know who is driving in this picture.

Jim Fox in his purple modified roadster. Jim would later partner with Jim Adair and Dennis Holding in the Fox, Holding, and Adair blown fuel dragster (also painted purple), and later Jim Fox and Dennis Holding would partner with Norm Weakley and Ron Rivero to form the "Frantic 4."

Fremont, not sure who the dragsters are (but note in the background, two of the original Dodge "Chargers," I think. Jim Nelson, Jimmy Nix were several of the teams that ran them, blown on gas. From another post, SoCal funny car driver/owner Charley Allen also got one).

Scoville & Koper at the '57 NHRA Nationals. I think that these guys were from Sherman Oaks, CA, they ran their A/G roadster up and down the west coast and obviously made the long tow to the Nationals.

Talk about early history, Woody in his first dragster (He went on to found Race Car Engineering, building some of the winningest dragsters in SoCal (and elsewhere). I think ultimately a lawsuit put him out of business, maybe related to the Gerry Glenn accident in the Atlas Oil Tool car. Anybody know more?

This is really a cool home built looking car. Notice the steering coming out the right side of the cowl and the kidney bean front runners flipped backwards.

Rick, great contributions to this thread. Can you tell me what the handle is sticking up out of the cockpit on the drivers right side?

It is the brake handle--a little longer than most in that era.
