The second post on this thread is sound advice.
I have had two chev frames '34 '35 and there is not a vin on them anywhere. Both of these cars originally had the vin tag screwed to the wooden floor.

Check with Bryan before you buy the car because PA rules vary. Depending on the state of purchase. and the age of the car, a signed bill of sale is all that's required to get a clear PA ***le but from others, a ***le with notarized signature is required. Whatever you do, make sure the numbers on the car match the numbers on the paperwork.

I won't bother explaining our three sticky ***le issues but trust me, Bryan's da man!!!. I thought I was screwed on one deal but he went with me to the DMV and after going through 2 brain dead clerks and a supervisor, he got a clear PA ***le for my avatar.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

  3. 41's had the plate on the floor too. In 69 a friend bought a 41 coupe from the original owner and before any money changed hands he pulled the mat back to check the VIN. I was surprised as I had never seen a tag on the floor. He had previously owned a 41 when he lived in Las Vegas.

    BB Jr,
Nice work to locate your fathers car, that in itself is a pretty neat accomplishment.
OK, once and for all: 1940 Chevrolet VIN tags (as shipped from the factory) are located as several have mentioned - p***enger side floor in front of the seat, just inside the sill plate. Rectangular tag, fastened by two small screws, one in upper LH corner, and 2nd in lower RH corner of tag. If it was there in 1976, I'd bet it's probably there today. Should be in good shape given the fact it's been under the carpet.

I'm guessing most states require VIN verification to register/license any out of state vehicle. I'd 2nd the motion on a well do***ented bill-of-sale. You'll probably have to get a VIN verification according to your state DMV. A call to your local office might provide some guidance as well. In the event it's not there, most states have a process to "re-issue" a VIN tag for a vehicle according to their state.

http://ww. w.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/fact_sheets/fs-toos.pdf Looks like you will have to verify vin either way you go. Since it doesn't sound like the car has been changed much e chances the tag is still there are pretty good. Unless your dad replace a lot of the floor when he built the car.

A short search found this http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1941/41csm003.htm

Moby, emailed Bryan at 6:30 this morning after I got off work. This was his email back to me.

Good morning! I’m very excited to hear your story. Sounds like quite a personal connection you have to this car.

With respect to the VIN, on a 1940 Chevy the VIN (or more properly the serial number) would have been on the p***enger side floor up under the cowl. It could be under the rubber mat. I would check there for the plate. When you get the car to Pennsylvania you will need to have a rubbing of the serial number or you will need to have the serial number verified by an inspection mechanic in order to get a ***le issued in your name. There is nothing you will need to do in IL. You should be good to go.
Please let me know if you are able to find that serial number plate on the p***enger side floor.
    Very truly yours,

Thanks again Moby for putting me in contact with him.

This sounds like a good story to tell in itself. Once you get the car home, post some photos and a story line about how you tracked it down. Should make good reading.

UPDATE: Talked to a friend of mine who is a retired Pennsylvania State Police Officer. He said that once I get it back home and IF it has no VIN tag, he will get in touch with people he knows to start the process of having the State of Pennsylvania reissue a VIN tag.

I've had two '40 Chev's, a two door sedan that's long gone and a coupe that I still have. Both had the VIN plate riveted to the firewall, p***enger's side, just like the attached pic.

A few here confuse the vin with the data plate, that Chevy vin would be on the floor only. It's not always a nightmare to get a vin from the state.

Chopped, I think the pic Halfdozen posted is, like you said, the data plate. All the research I have done states that the 1940 VIN plate is located on the floor on the p***enger side.

That's correct. Don't confuse the trim tag (as posted by Halfdozen) located on the firewall, with the VIN plate, originally located on p***enger side floorboard. Trim tag provides codes for the model, style, color, etc., but has nothing to do with the VIN number of the vehicle. In any event, sounds like you have a path forward. I'll look forward to your updates with your coupe. What's old, is new again!

Thanks Daddy-O. I was going to leave on the 19th of this month, but, found out today that the company I work for has me scheduled to go to the local community college for a week of school, physics......ugh. Part of my three year apprenticeship. Anyway, I will now be leaving Pennsylvania the 22nd and driving to Illinois. Will have the old girl home on the 23rd. Quite excited, its all I can think about!!!

If the owner does not want to lift the carpet you may be able to feel or sight the tails of the rivets your dad used to attach the VIN to the floor. Chances are if the rivets are there and do not look disturbed the tag will be where he left it, happy hunting.
