I think this is Jude Kilcrest from Lake Charles in the C/FD. WCD thinks this is a Garlits car. No ID on the 'tower' side-info always welcome. Note that there is no barrier on either side of this old airport strip. If the lawyers and insurance people saw this today, they would need resuscitation (or a strong drink at least)!

A pair of E/Stock 57's have made the long tow from their respective homes. The orange car is Jim Hayter from Cushing OK and the red one belongs to Jimmy Waibel from Lakeland, FL. While the top fuel cars got the glory, there wouldn't be much of a show without all of these less well known guys and their myriad of car types and classes. [IMG]

The money and points are at stake as Nando Hasse in the Banzai II trails Boyd and Griffith off the line.

Louis Boyd and Wayne Griffith (straw hat) pose for their winners photo at the end of an excellent day. That's all for my Opelousas 1967 show. Hope you enjoyed it. [IMG]

Great pictures, I have never heard of the Green Gang before and they are from my home town. I will have to ask some old timers and find out more. Also it is possible that the unidentified dragster could be Willard Buff from Bay City Texas.

I was talking to Boogie at the NHRR in Bowling Green last weekend. He was hanging out with Glenn Cupit and cruising the pits in his 27 roadster.

Thanks for posting all the great shots from the good old day's of drag racing. The Willys pickup truck looks like one Gerry Tarvin used to drive years ago.

Here are some more shots from George Klass collection, some with IDs:
Breschini and Argee, probably before Fred Sorensen joined, injected here, later blown. Steel body, 354" Chrysler (I think)

Gene Mooneyham (left) and Al Sharp, back when the car was silver. I remember it in this form at the '60 Smoker's meet.

I think that this is the Ardun powered K-88 of Holder and Purvis, NoCal, looks like Half Moon Bay. If I'm right (??), these guys ran over 160 on fuel, one of the fastest unblown Arduns in the early '60s' By contrast, the Ardun digger in my avatar ran 137 (slower than a good stocker today!), so we wondered what Holder and Purvis were doing right....

I don't know whose altereds these are, but really captures the days when altereds had steel bodies and ran for trophies...I think this is Half Moon Bay (which closed because of noise complaints, if I remember correctly)

saw this over on the Fremont FB page - and that would be "Brocchini" and Argee - the block was a 331 in early 195 roadster (as 392's were new and in demand?? my uncle would say)....but like most - the cranks were a little modified....maybe a 354 when they went blown. Saw the "girdle" he built for it at the time they were building the new nostalgic car in 90's....was lucky to have pancakes with Don Argee a time or two..... the frame would see another body - Bantam for sure and maybe two - a Fiat?...

  16. Don Argee ran that roadster partnered with the Burkholder Bros. for a while.

  17. your right Dean....with a new body and still with that little motor.....wonder if the Fiat body was next?

Too early by a few years to be Don Bonfanti's "Amos Moses" car from La. , but he sure was a strong Comp contender altered with injected SBC in the early 70's as I recall...

  19. Here Don is getting his butt kicked by that pesky '34 coupe. How cool is it that two steel Fords are racing for the Jr. Eliminator #1 spot?!!!

Thanks, guys, for filling in the blanks...I'm curious about whether the Argee-Sorensen/Burkholder brothers actually ran a Fiat or Bantam body...the Burkholders ran both:

and Burkholders did partner with Argee and Sorensen, as Dean noted, here is another picture of the roadster at San Gabriel:

but I don't remember the Argee and Sorensen with any other body besides this steel '29. The Burkholders did run both Fiat and Bantam bodies on their then-Olds powered altered...wonder if there are any pictures of the Argee car with another body?

I remember the car like that too. The '60 meet with Tony Waters, these guy's and Speed Sport was priceless. Like a lot of people, I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I can remember those days vividly. Lot of fun racing back then.

"Prior to 1963 B & A ran the original 195 car, first unblown then with 671. In 1963 we teamed up with them, our Bantam AA/A car, their Hemi with Don driving. We competed as a team for one season, Fred Sorinson came in when Brochinni retired end of 1963. The Burkholder AA/A Pete and I Hairy built in 1961 orig. had a NHRA required steel body it was a Fiat. Around 1962 fiberglass was allowed and hence the Bantam. We sold the Bantam chassis to Nick Otto 1968 and Frank Pitts drove it untill they got the Warlock AA/FA. Pete and I built the 23-T tub car ran first with Old's them 392 Hemi. 1970. Hope this timeline helps." - Harry Burkholder
"Don Argee ran a roadster body. Also the Sorensen & Argee "Bastard Child" at one of the earlier CHRRs. If I remember correctly Don ran over 200 mph in it at Sacto." - Potvin D.

  23. correct HB - as I understand it....there were two 195 roadsters.....

  24. A little HMB candy....

  25. Roseville Carl, Thank you! Wish I was around in those days...

Here are some shots from the Drag Racing Vintage Texas site on Facebook (at least I found it on Facebook). I don't know all the cars, but it's Texas drag racing history (an as a native Southern Californian, I always admired the Texas guys, they came ready to race!

This is the engine in the above modified roadster, it was called the "Tex-sun" or something like that, don't know much about it
