Alright, once upon a time i learned the hard way about how to mount a Flathead to an engine stand. So now I want to see the "Safe/Smart" way to mount and 49 Olds 303 block. Should i do like the flatheads and make a exhaust flange mount or what?
Mine too (about 6 years now), but I have to admit I'm nervous. The Olds has an even longer extended bell than the flathead.
Do NOT use a three wheeled stand. A four wheeler with a good wide stance is best. They tend to be top heavy once the heads are on too.
Agreed, mount it with the bellhousing bolt holes, and use the highest and lowest holes to spread the load out. If it makes you nervous build a front center post mounted to your engine stand, and support the front. Makes rotating the engine difficult, but at least you won't have nightmares about cracked bellousings and broken engine stand bolts. You could build an exhaust flange mount if you wanted to, it would make working on the heads easy. But when it came time to bolt the block to the heads, well........
Thanks for all the replies, I think I will Get the extended bell housing as close to the vertical riser as possible and fab a bar for storage that connects the front engine mounts to the legs of the stand. I plan on using a cotter pin so when i need to rotate I can pull it out.
