can anybody tell me anything about this tach what year it is does it take a box to work thank u very much for the help
I think it's referred to as a "pedestal" tach and uses a sender or "ignition monitor" that looks like this.
They may also have had different model senders for different ignitions (electronic or not) and different wiring instructions for each as well. Check the close ups of the literature in this expired auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEWART-WARNER-TACHOMETER-SENDER-MONITOR-990A-SW-960-SERIES-PED-PEDASTAL-TACH-/160910635636?item=160910635636&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&cmd=ViewItem&vxp=mtr&hash=item2577057274&nma=true&si=bGZjFBKC%2B2HnJhOlFDwGiOk8Nro%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
SW 970 series tach. Available in pedistal or dash mount. Vintage mid 60s. Requires appropriate sender, depending on your ignition.. Points style, vintage electronic, magneto. Do not try without appropriate sender. Don't know if electronic version would work with modern HEI set-ups. Senders show up on E-bay quite often and quite often for less than $100, if you watch for them. Recently picked up a NOS sender for a older and rarer tach for $50. Good luck Canuck
At one time, I had a diagram saved on my laptop computer. I can check when I get home to see if I still have it.
I think that's for a transistor ignition, may also have batteries inside. If so, all the 3 wire senders with a silver adjuster plug I've run across didn't as well as the little gold ones that mount directly to the tach.
Sorry for the delay. I forgot for a bit what it was I was supposed to do when I got home. Here is what I have. Hope this helps.
I cannot say for certain that all of those pictures go together. They are just pictures I've saved over the years. I know the instructions go together, and the 3 with the black tach go together, but the 4cyl one is an oddball I'm pretty sure.
I the final analysis it doesn't matter. That red box is a battery box and the replacement batteries are long extinct. What a dumb design even in the 60s. They had plenty of 12V power to work with and chose to go with short lived batteries.

I know this is late by years but it may help someone that may be looking. This is my first post in the H.A.M.B. I do own this complete setup in new mint never installed condition and I have read where the 970 Series was used in the Yenco Camaros.
