When I'm driving my 51 Pontiac Chieftain sometimes the speeedometer will peg out and start to squeal. When I let off the gas it will stop and go back to normal. Would lubricating the speedometer cable have any effect of stopping this?

A speedo cable in my experience will make noise but not cause the speedo to peg
    Sometimes the needle will bounce

I went out and disconnected the speedometer cable and the speedometer is pegged out at 100mph. I have been doing alittle research into this and sometimes the speedo head might have to be oiled?

the speedometer needs help. Sometimes you can lube it and it'll be ok for a while. If you can find someone to rebuild it for you, that would be the way to go. If it acts up in the summer, it will be a lot worse in the winter...they don't like cold

Well I pulled the speedometer out today and pulled the brass cap out and oil the speedo drive. Went for a test drive and it doesn't peg out anymore but the it sticks at 40mph.

It will amaze you what a few drops of oil will do. HRP

sticking might be something as simple as the needle bent, binding on the bezel.

It's not a good sign. Just had similar problem 2 weeks ago. This is in a truck that hadn't been driven for 40 years. The speedometer was so noisy at first I thought the throwout bearing went bad, the needle was pegged at 100. I disconnected the speedometer cable at the speedo. I oiled the brass bushing at the rear of the speedometer. It worked great for 150 miles, no noise at all and it read correct speed. I thought the problem was fixed. Then the speedometer just quit. It locked up tight and twisted the cable off. It will be later this winter to pull the dash and fix it right.
