I'd rather support local New England shows that are formulated around FUN, not MONEY.The "what's in your wallet?" crowd with the feather dusters, lawn furniture, spray wax,and million dollar cars are the anti- Christs of hot rodding. Home grown cars, loud music, cold beer, and loose women make me smile from ear to ear.And you can take the $8. plastic trophys and shove 'em- well you know! It's the KISS philosophy- Keep it Simple Stupid! Money, rules, and liability have screwed up everything we spent the 50's and 60's perfecting."Sherman, set the WayBack Machine for 1963!" Grab a rack of cold ones, a little cupie doll, and head out to the Interstate! It's Sat. night and it's your chance to be Milner! That's what I'M talkin' about!

I think some of it depends on location. In CA you have a wealth of good shows to choose from. For some other parts of the Country GGs brings together a large group of iron and in a well ordered manner. Some is not HAMB friendly so keep walking. In MA we have Ty-Rods coming up for a good fix of a lot of fine Traditional Rods and Customs.TEB

For me it has always been about the trip as much as it is about the show. One summer, every run I went to was at least hundred miles one way. I have more memories from hanging out in hotel parking lots, then I do some of the shows. (R.I.P. Executive Inn Louisville)

With that said a quality show is a quality show, regardless of who put it on. Frog Follies, James Dean/Ducktail Run and Billetproof are examples of show that equal the big guys in size and quality and are worth the drive to me.

  4. I don't do Good Guys any more. The last event I went too while I had a good time screwing with them, was pretty snobbish. That said if a local car club put on a show and it was too snobbish for my taste I would not be back to it either. If I am going to an event and I have to put up with elitists I is just not worth my trouble.

I guess at this stage of the game for me it is all about hanging out and having a good time, I just don't have time for the BS anymore.

That's Kind of what I do too. This year so far I've done Torque Fest, Rust Revival, The Bourbon Run, Beatersville, Indy Spam A Rama (but didn't go to the Good Guys show), The S**** drive, Indy Road Rockets Rumble, The Belltown Bash, Highland BBQ cruise in, Fathers day Rod Run, The Melt Down Drags, and the NSRA nationals. I may be forgetting 1 or 2 but thats about 5000 miles so far. I love the road trip more than the show. Still to come HAMB Drags, Cheaterama Newport Hill climbs, Iron invasion Maybe more. I'll put more miles on my '40 than my daily driver this year. Im just looking for an excuse to go somewhere ; )

We have rodding buddies all over the country and meet new ones all the time. If we quit going to shows we wouldn't get to hang out and party with our friends we meet up with from all over. The shows are just a reason to go, its the people that you meet and the frienships you build is what counts for me, to me thats the win.

The Goodguys shows are ok but would rather attend shows put on by local clubs, the only thing I do not like about the GG shows is you have to join to enter a car which adds more to the expense of attending. The biggest show I attend is the Turkey run in Daytona which is a adventure to get there and also use it for a vacation and no club to join to enter a car.

I like the smaller shows with traditional hot rods and customs (there are always a few rat rods and street rods that manage to get in) mostly for the atmosphere and the live music on top of a concentration of cars I want to see. With all the car club jackets I really feel more at home. The bigger shows seem to have a lot of "out of touch" car owners.

  10. Blanchardville July 2014 011.jpg Blanchardville July 2014 007.jpg I'm strictly a smaller show guy, I love to look at cars that average guys build in thier garages and bring out to the local car shows and picnics. Love the atmosphere of a parklike setting and everyone having a good time and talking cars. I'm going to a little town named Cobb this Saturday for thier annual car show and corn roast, ( I know, a corn roast in Cobb ). The Goodguys and Street Rod Nats just are't my cup of tea. Anywhere from 20 to a couple hundred cars is what I like. Biggest one I've attended in the last 5 years is Spring Green, about 400 cars. Here's a couple pics of my kind of show.

I hate big events and just about refuse to go to them.
I just hate the h***les of parking & fighting the crowds, standing in line, etc.
I will go to small shows though.

I've just been too lazy to go to any shows for quite awhile. Parking and traffic ugh, I deal with that every day with my job. And personally I hate having bands, or 50s music piped in. And the scene people, Bettys etc, are off putting to me ... LOL, I sound like real fun don't I =)

I think its more fun with just bombing around in my rides, or meeting up with a few friends. Ill still go to shows, big and small ... just need to get off my ****.

  13. Just depends on my mood at the time, haven't been to GG or NSRA shows in years. I do occasional local shows and a few races, drag and circle track, mostly go to see friends. Then it's just driving around.

I really could care less whether it is a local or large venue event as long as there's cars there. I appreciate all types of cars and the workmanship/creativity that goes into them at any level. but I will say I would prefer to go to a show with a good swap meet/car corral area included. awards whether plaques or trophies, have no place at a true car show. the only trophy should be the friends you know and meet there. also as someone already said, at the larger venues vendors/ suppliers are a welcomed addition in my book.

I think from reading this thread location has a lot to do with it. I live south of Chicago and we can go to a local cruise every nite of the week. For me cruise nites have replaced most of the Local Saturday or Sunday shows ,many of which are run by companies that charge $20 to enter and have a shot at a trophy. The club run shows , Gears and Ears for example draw 7or800 cars a year ,cheap entry, food and awesome hand made awards by the members. I rarely miss it.
All that being said the allure of the larger shows are many. I travel usually with a group, we enjoy the journey, taking the 2 lane, eating local, and the memories of our trips together. It's about having a drink in the evening and bs ing.
They offer venders, tech advice and at the Nats even seminars, what's not to like? They are what you make them.
You don't like the newer cars? walk by them instead of *****in' that they're even there.
This year I made it to the Bunny Run(club run),Hot Rod Reunion, and Syracuse , all for the fist time this year. Had a good time at each as diverse as those events are to each other. I just try to keep an open mind and find enjoyment at shows large or small.

I've never been to a GG event. I honestly haven't seen a lot of photos from those events that have made me want to pay the high price of admission. After having run the Hunnert Car Pileup for 10 years, I know what it takes to put on an event, and yes, the price is high. It seems like GG events are good places to get potential magazine coverage, if that's your thing, but most magazines seem to skip the Midwest anyway. There does appear to be good variety, but like someone said, you're going to have to sort through a lot of red 57 Chevys to find something cool.

For me, there are a lot of good sized (300-1000 cars) local, club run events that offer variety and entertainment - bands, vendors, etc. I will always choose those over some mega-show. I'm also a little burnt out on shows. Sitting around staring at a bumper isn't all that fun. Seeing the same 200 cars isn't all that interesting. I'm finding myself more drawn to events with action - drags, road racing, go kart/minibike racing, reliability runs. I sill like shows, and hanging out with like-minded people, watching bands, etc, but being involved in the action is more fun.

Don't know about y'all but I don't usually care too much for Lawn Chair events but had a ball in Louisville looking at 10, 288 cars.

Tannergang's correct!----When GG started out, it was just 1948 & earlier, same as NSRA, of which I was a charter member, when they went to later models, I aced out!
The fun is in driving, not lawn chairing!
Now days, too much emphasis is put on trophy stuff (best this & that), good ideas promote good times especially for smaller car runs or shows where funds are mostly donated to a worthy local cause.

Viva Las Vegas is the biggest I want to see. Lots of shiny lights and a cool off hotel right there.
Its a 400 mile drive from here.
We have a few small shows and I go to them because I like to see stuff that works.
    Kinda keeps me inspired.

Ah, you pro GGs & NSRA have already established your selves by the threads (Whos' Goin'?) and the avatars. The OP is researching information as to make an Kustom event appeal & draw as many as possible. Really ALL CAPS gets to be redundant. This place was never intended to be another outlet for the Big Shows. Esp. the early days.

I`m roughly 7 +hours away. If you get a good amount of customs to attend, I`ll be there. I can see Street Rods at every show I go too. Nothing wrong with them, I just like seeing customs. Getting a guy from 60 miles away to attend is no big deal. You need to work on the guy who will drive 5 hours plus to attend. How you do that is the big question. Maybe if you get Richard Munz of Madison to bring Sweeter Than Wine(40 Merc), I would come anyway. Good luck.

I don't have any problem with strictly show cars, but, I prefer to go to events like the Road Rockets host in Indianapolis. People interacting with each other and their cars, sharing innovations and techniques they have used and not afraid of their vehicles being touched.
