A serious bummer that it was cancelled . Whatcha gonna do , I guess ?? I'm sure the people who made the trek can find something to do locally , albeit not nearly as cool as speedweek .
None taken,I was sent to me with a note that the photo was taken this week,,mass media hysteria I suppose. HRP
Yeah that has been all over the internet (forums, Facebook, Instagram, etc) the last few days. I saw it being posted as early as Thursday and people saying Speedweek had been canceled. Too bad by Saturday it was true...
Yup, what are you going to do when you are on the salt and get blasted by a thunderstorm? Anyone that has spent time on the salt has done it, myself included.
We had to drive through that deep water too. We drove down with my daily. When we got home we did the sprinkler under the car deal. Plus we have so much rain here in the winter I never had any rust problems, and we drove that van down there three times.
Wendover will bounce back next weekend when the hotels will all be full of gamblers. To be honest, the hotel/casinos much prefer the regular weekend crowds to the salt racers. Mick
We have stayed there outside speed week and also at speed week . Outside speed week the place was deserted , casinos with only 4 or 5 punters at most .how do they survive?? The bars and restaurants were empty ,this was late May.
I just got back to the shop. 3500 mile round trip, I never even got out of the truck. Sometimes you just have to accept the fact that you have to turn around and go home. We will try it again at the World finals. JC
since this was the 100th anniversary, and no racing happened, are they going to consider next year to be the 100th?
It was the 100th anniversary of racing on the salt, not SCTA on the salt. There is still racing scheduled on the salt this year - SCTA is not the only user.
Now that just sucks.More so for the fine folks that came from overseas. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
SCTA said they may be able to extend the dates of the world finals to have a combined event finals/speekweek. In my opinion I'd much rather race there in early October when there is actually some oxygen to tune with. JC
Knowing things were bad, we went out to the Lake Bonneville on Saturday to retreve our sales trailer we had set up. Lucky for us the trailer floor was just above water level. The two laydown tarps were gone, there were screwed in with 6 inch drywall screws. One was spotted floating 20 feet away, the other just gone. While we were there, the meet was called. So we took what photos we could and hooked up and headed to town. Everyone seems to be talking about the hit to the town and such. They don't make money off Speed Week, they make their money off gamblers. The ones that took the hit were of course SCTA, but they have their 'rain-out' fund to cushion the blow. But the ones that took the hit were the outside vendors that invested in product: food vendors, the always there sun glasses vendor, video guy, and yes the calendar people, us. There are rumors of an extended World Finals, but that water was deep.
Flying out today. Last of the 5100 crew for speed week. Did have a good time at the Nugget car shows and talking with folks at the bend in the road and end of the road. Water was still real deep Sunday will check it out today before I leave. Did get a chance to buy stuff at the SCTA trailer Saturday. Also got to get the 100 years of racing Bonneville book. The years rained out are on page 165 1982,83,93,94 and now 2014. Hope it doesn't follow the trend and be rained out 2015
