What am I missing here I m trying to get the tranny off a Model A engine sitting on the garage floor. I took out two bolts from the trans. Into the bell housing but then I noticed the two in the bottom come from inside the bell housing out so I removed the bolts holding the bell housing to the engine and now I can get it about half an inch apart but seems like something is not undone yet. I have broken plenty of things not knowing and using a bigger bar, what am I missing? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Probably something that is supposed to slip apart is rusty/dirty and resisting...... It's been a long while since I worked on a Model A, but I seem to remember an inspection/access cover on the bell housing just above and forward of the transmission. If there is, have you removed that and taken a peek inside. Oh, and if you took two bolts out from the inside, you must have the bottom cover off as well. Can you turn the motor on its side and look into the bell housing? If you are not particularly concerned with reusing the clutch, you might spray WD40 or similar around the spline area of the clutch disc. Ray
It didn't say GRANNY ! Damned I used to know a lot about Model A's and had a lot apart. But I guess it's been a long time. I'd be looking at some old Model A parts books. And yes, a good lube is always helpful in getting things off.
hmm.. try to get it from behind, use good lube, a couple a good tugs and you' get IT off in no time... wait what are you talking about?
A GOOD laugh is good for the soul. I've had a few from this thread at the tranny's expense. You don't want a wobbly shaft in your tranny or you might get a leak!!!
Boy, do great minds think alike or what? Mine went right to," Why are you under HIS dress to begin with?" Can't help you with the Model A issue, far too old for my concerns. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Uuuuhhhhh,,,,,,,,,,,I dont know how to get a tranny off, slam it on the floor? We dont need no stinkin psychiatrist. WE GOT THE HAMB!!!!!!!
Sweet Lord this is bad. @wood470, is your shift tower off? The transmission only has 4 bolts holding it to the bell - all accessible from the inside only. There are two additional bores in the case for the shift tower rods.
Wood: I would guess there is rust on the tip of the clutch shaft from sitting and not being used often?? I would gently work it back and forth to see if it will loosen up. If your not re-using the disc, spray whatever you can in an effort to lube the tip of the shaft. When not in use, they are not completely covered by the splined part of the clutch disc and can rust from condensation alone. Tim
