That looks like too much work...err...fun. ;)

  2. Did I miss something while rereading this fable ?... every aspect of the work done here has had some type of double duty ... multitasking on a GIANT SPEEDSTER scale ... will these starter modifications be used to help guide/ track the homing pidgeons needed to locate fuel reserves ? or double as a musical component interface to the calliope trailer/t-shirt vending display?

    Multitasking.

My one residential rental is giving me fits. New floor and floor covering then the stove quits and the AC leaks. Now the floor around the AC will have to be replaced. But never mine that. To the speedster.

    Ode to a Starter

I got the starter back together.
    It seemed a simple fix.
But fate had something else in store
    To throw into the mix.
A brush had made bad contact.
New posts I turned and fitted.
    I put it back together
    And then I almost sh*tted.
    The armature, it wouldn't turn.
    Not even the tiniest start.
I pulled the thing back off
    And took it all apart.
    I tested and I checked.
I spied, with glass I looked.
    Not a single tiny wire
    Appeared remotely cooked.
What could the problem be, I asked?
    I'd built these things before.
I gave up for the day
    And headed for the door.
    Tonight, I'll lay in bed
    And dream of motor windings
Of shunt and series, compound even
    Then ponder all my findings.
    A bang began our universe
    Or so has science said
From a tiny spot in space
    They say all matter fled
But I know this isn't true
No bang, no fire, no smoke
    Because without a working starter
    We're living a cosmic joke.

  5. THE GROUND re check the ground now that is all cleaned up , hopefully your new insulating material is not too thin not allowing for armature end play ... tolerence? we don't need no stinkin tolerence

I am sure glad the poetry did not start until now or all those rereads would have not happened

    Physics

After I posted my little poem, Peter Higgs called me from England. As you probably know he's the world's top physicist who came up with a little thing called the Higgs Boson. Anyway, he's a big speedster fan and a lurker here, and since I mentioned the Big Bang he thought I might be able to give him a little help on a problem he was having trouble with. In the interest of history I recorded the conversation.

    "Hello, Jerry?"
"Peter, good to hear from you. How are things getting along?"
"Smashing, simply smashing--atoms that is. Listen, Jerry, I like your idea about something starting the cosmic Big Bang."
"You think it might be the Higgs Boson?"
"No, I was thinking it has more to do with the Einstein's Unified Field Theory."
"You mean where he tried to unite weak and strong atomic forces, gravity and magnetism?"
"Yes, it's a theory that's very important to physics. Any pursuit of the Unified Field Theory must be grounded in solid science."
"Hold on a minute, Peter. Did I hear correctly? Did you say--field...must be grounded. I gotta go. I think I know what's wrong with the starter on the speedster."

I hung up and drove straight over to the shop. I took apart the starter and sure enough one of the wires coming from the field windings to one of the brushes was grounded to the body of the starter, probably from years of vibration. I glued some heavy gasket paper under both wires that fed the brushes and sealed them with my favorite grey import gasket sealer. After re-assembly, the starter worked perfectly--in accordance with the laws of physics, of course.

    Jerry

Notice the whirling gear in the last picture. (If you think I'm going to pull out the field windings and rewind them--I got a big bang for you.)

Sure, the gear is whirling there, but does it whirl the engine?o_O

Does this mark an end to the lollygaggling? You know, to get to the part of the project where you drive it and post videos and this the thread is sorta kinda done?

I spent the day lollygaggling. :) Or was it lollygagging? I can't remember. I did install the starter and then spun over the engine. I also worked on the windshield. I think it's ready for primer. You know, I simply can't go for a proper drive without a windshield. The wind might muss my hair. :)

Hey, I'm going to try again. There's a big AACA car show in Clarkesville, Ga this weekend that I forgot about. I want to blow them away with the speedster. I can't drive there; it's about 30 miles, and I've got no insurance or tag. But I can load it up and drive to the show field. I've just got to get a few things done so the car doesn't look like a guy with his pants half off. I need the running boards in place, a tonneau over the rear seat opening, and the rolls on the door tops finished. I'm going to see Ken tomorrow and beg him to do it. It wouldn't take him two hours to sew them up. I'd install them. What else? The wood trim along the side of the deck would be nice. I might have to work all night. The actual car show isn't until Sunday so I'd have all day Saturday to work on the speedster. But my daughter's birthday is Saturday. Daughter-Speedster. Daughter-Speedster. Mmmmm. http://negaantiqueauto.com/

Couldn't you bake the birthday cake in the exhaust oven on the way over to the show?

Birthday cake on the way to the show. Fantastic! patman gets a free ride in the speedster for that suggestion. Ulu--I liked the poetry too. Breaks up the monotony. The voices told me to do it, and I must obey the voices. Mac, you're going to the show aren't you? Yesterday, I ran around looking for some material for the tonneau which I found at Don the Morgan man. Ken said he could do all the upholstery, hopefully today. Today, I do deck side trim and running boards. Can't forget the birthday lunch at my daughter's school today! Tonight, another dinner birthday celebration. When I was young I was lucky to get a cake. The voices say I gotta go now.

I know what you mean Jerry...The voices aren't real, but they have some really good ideas anyway.o_O

  21. Jerry,

Brad may get to Clarkesville, but unfortunately, that is also the morning of our "Beginning Band Blast" here in Barrow Co... I'll be in a room with about 40 6th Grade trumpet players... yeehaw :D

I don't think you'd need tags to drive the speedster here. Just put a slow moving vehicle sign on the back, stay off the freeway & keep it under 30 MPH. Works for tractors and big machinery.

(...well, just say you're going to keep it under 30 MPH when you get stopped.)

Working like a dog! Worked till 8:30 last night. No time for pictures. Running boards done. Floorboards covered. Finish deck side trim today. Okay, 4 pictures. Back to work!
