    For keeping your hat on;
Sure the hat fit is part of it plus windsheild hight and angle, but airflow is what is real.
Here's some tips, its likely by moving just little away from the side of car putting your head just a little off the wind coming around the side of windsheild will get your hat in less flow=if you tend to hang over to your left your hat will blow off every time a odd gust happens.
Note that some like to add those wing vent things to the side of windsheild, not just for looks{I don't like the look] but they don't need to be big and wide as made,to work at contorling flow around the windsheild. Ya, I been driving hotrods for a few miles, have fun,I still hate rain n wet roads...

While crossing the Imperial Dunes between Yuma and El Centro in my '27 Touring with a very strong, gusty wind, I had my Marine Corps watch cap (kint beanie) blown off my head. Luckily I caught it before it got away and stuffed it between the seat and my left leg until my next stop.

Open car headgear for long trips at highway speeds will usually be my watch cap for cold weather and my Marine Corps boonie hat with a chin strap for warm (usually bloody hot) weather. Both work well , but in an open car, in the right (wrong) conditions, just about any headgear can be blown off of your head.

  3. X2 on this! Even with the top on and the cap turned around backwards, I've had them come off. Since there are several roadsters in our club, we got together and bought doo-rags and had theclub name embroidered on them.

I'm sure the doo rags are quite practical and work well, but I just can't bring myself to rock the Rosie the Riveter / Vato Loco look.. Just my personal preference.

Dana's post reminded me I have wind wings as well. The car really isn't that windy inside, but the top sticks out pretty even with the ends of the wind wings, so it xan and does scoop in some air at the very back. Odd gusts will take off pretty much anything.

Got the same watch cap for winter time escapades, along with "Turtle fur" insulated neck band and gloves.... I kid you not guys, I FREEZE at 60 degrees. 'Sides, it was a great disguise when I hot lapped (full on reverse lock, "damn the torpedoes let's go sideways", style!) the giant bronze horse sculpture/roundabout several times in the heart of toney downtown Scottsdale one Saturday night last winter... That's the section of town that on Friday and Saturday nights has a heartbeat.

Summer time I wear a cloth Safari hat with a neck band and cinch it down tight when I need to. I have to admit it does stay home when hopping around the neighborhood, but on longer trips it's mandatory.

I looked at the flexfit website and was impressed. I think I'll try one. I'm a ballcap kinda' guy anyhow but don't care for the really tight bands that I seem to need to keep 'em on my head in even the slightest breeze. I think I have a pointy head...

I also dug around in my stuff and found an old boonie hat with a tie strap that I'm going to try in the meantime. It makes me look like a redneck survivalist with an attitude...which shouldn't come as a big surprise to anybody 'cuz that's not all that far off from what I am...instead of a genteel hot rodder (is that an oxymoron...?).

I've got several beanies 'cuz it gets cold here in Texas in the winter, but I'm not sure that cooking my brain in the summer would be such a smooth move...I'm a child of the '60s after all, dain bramage and all, and don't know how many more brain cells I can afford to lose.

Now for the impractical, pure style side of nutty, open Model T headgear, there is the straw "pineapple picker" hat (think of Punchy, the Hawaiian Punch guy). Then there is my favorite, for the hot rod / beach / "Eric Von Zipper" '60s movie vibe, the Prussian Army helmet (think of the closing credits from "Hogan's Heros"). With my Prussian Army helmet, red and white striped t-shirt, wallabys (shoes) and a pair of dark, wrap around sunglasses, I'm half way to Muscle Beach.

Actually, the funniest bit I had with head gear in this deal was last winter. Good buddy of mine and sometimes contributor to this thread JOHN EVANS, had just sold his '27 when I got this car on the road and knows that I freeze easily. So, very generously he gave me his rabbit fur lined "Tuck" hat with the full ear flaps that had been his roadster headgear for decades. I looked a little like a "cool" Elmer Fudd in this deal, but it was warm. So comes the early morning of the November So-Cal get together, I excitedly put on my cap for it's debut, and ran out the door. Got to So-Cal about three miles away, and suddenly realized that I couldn't see. I've frozen my eyeballs before, so I figured that is what's up. Getting out of the car I realize I can't OPEN my eyes, either.... That's how I learned that I am damn near deathly allergic to Rabbit fur!

  10. I wear a beanie on local trips where I'm likely to be stopping and starting,(my head is above my screen, cant get any lower) but on longer trips I've got the flying helmet with the fur lining. Boy does that pay for itself on cold frosty mornings.( and the white flying scarf) Think snoopy and the red baron:D

Or for that classic fifties "bonneville & back" look, you could always go with a pith helmet! I'm with you on the douche-rags ( you have to live in north Surrey to really understand this), those are mandatory head gear around here for the guys with the "support your local big red machine" bumper stickers on thier rusty mini-vans, complete with the Sonny Barger signature series seat covers...

That's been working for me, for 5 years.

  14. Okay guys, time to educate me again....what the f..k are " Doo Rags " ? I am thinking along the lines of what our English friends do with a handerchief when the sun comes out for their one day of summmer. Now picture this guys, man with lily white legs sticking out from under dress shorts, roman type sandels and the crowning glory, the hanky with the all important knot tied in each corner drapped over his head. Nay, not a nice picture and certainly no good for driving roadsters aye. So, what are doo rags and with a picture please ?

You've got the picture 100%! Only, put a Harley Davidson shirt in the mix and a bunch of bad tattoos... Oh, boots instead of sandals

Fortunately I have a head of THICK hair so I rarely wear hats. But when I do (sounds like a meme is coming, doesn't it?) I only wear Flexfits.

I have had to wrap a cold wet handkerchief and tie it doo rag fashion on a real hot day. It's 115° here in the summer. Basically we get Phoenix weather minus 5°.

When it's hot like that you'll do damn near anything to cool down.

Oh yeah, a Flexfit will blow off my head at anything north of about 40 mph. Expensive suckers, so I won't wear them in a roadster.

I've worn 'em at my highway speeds and never lost it. Ya gotta snug it down.

Yup, me too. It's all in the snugging down.
That thick head of hair you have probably contributes to your hat loss Eric ! ;)
My bald head however holds onto my hat quite well. A few days of not shaving and the stubble even helps :D

I wear my old Army boonie cap. Has the little draw string to hold it on, stays on without any problem.

I know I'm behind the times, but this is always the first thing that pops into my mind when I see a guy in a doo-rag...

A true classic... John Cleese steals the scene before he even opens his mouth. Man that guy was funny.

  25. Yep, that just about covers the " Doo Rag " very nicely, thanks FG. I'm still smiling about our poor English friends but must confess, their humour is so good...

  26. Well, I didn't have a chance to get mine out and model it for a picture, but for the record, it looks nothing like the guy's from Counting Cars, it looks more like the bandannas pirates wore. Much more form fitted, and not so low over the eyes.
