  4. Earlier this year, Dennis Varni shipped his 1961-63 Ford Falcon GT to South Africa to participate in the Endurance Rally Association's fifth "Classic Safari Challenge".

The grueling 5000-mile, 26-day road race began in Cape Town and roared through Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and back to Cape Town, South Africa ... where Dennis (& his wife Kathy) finished in first place ahead of 30 other competitors!

Here's some pics of the Varni's Falcon:

Man, thats cool. IIRC, Hot Rod did an article on swapping a y-block into a falcon almost as soon as they came out.

George, I saw in one of your posts that you like the 64-65 body style. I have had this one for 43 years, and it's a factory 4 speed with the original T-10 and stock shifter. 2014-01-25 093201.jpg

Man, thats friggen perfect Marty. What are the wheel/tire sizes? Are those 14"? The '65s are the best IMO, love the side trim. You guys are killin me. At some point, I guess I'm just gonna have to get another one...

Marty, if you have more pics, (like front/rear 3/4 for instance) I'd love to see them. If you want, you can pm them to me, or post them here. Its funny, I did the math, you bought that car right around the same time I started to really get hooked on them.

This is incredibly cool. Whenever anyone mentions Africa Safari Challenge, it makes me think of Erik Carllson...

George, the tires are 205-70R 14's. Here are the other views, it's just an "old white car", driven by an "old white guy". IMG_4935.JPG IMG_4936.JPG IMG_4937.JPG

Well this old white guy is seriously lusting after that old white car...Damn thats nice. The 4 speed/bench is nice. I'm starting to think 14"s are key to making these cars look the way we remember them.

That's because you can't get a 13" tire with the same overall diameter as you could in the '60s; but they're easy to come by in 14" and 15" sizes. Right around 25.5" is where it's at, IMO.

Never even occurs to me to run 13"s on a Falcon, I was refering to 14"s as opposed to 15"s. I relate to these cars more from a late sixties/early seventies, "musclecar" viewpoint, 289's T-10s, higher ride hieght, 14" cragars or five spokes, and a G-60ish rear tire size. I do agree on the 25.5/26 tire hieght, but my point is, on these cars, it looks more "right" to my old eyes on a 14" rim than on a 15".

Here's my 65 as it currently sits. Still building it, of course, but a lot has been done. V8 manual steer up front, custom 4 link out back, 225's front with 275's rear, custom 2x2 heavy SFC's, 351C with long tube 2" headers and a TKO 500, and the list goes on. Cage and seats are going in next. Used to have a thread on here but was deleted for being "too modern?" Not sure why.

i'd hazard a guess that they're all '60's, since none of them have the cove trim used on Deluxe '61's. can't imagine a dealer ordering nothing but base models even of Falcons. that red one sticks out for sure; wonder if it was one of the few Fire Dept models before they gave up on compacts?

Yup, and when it came to the mirrors, none to well, I might add! Of all the Falcons I have owned over the years, not one has ever had the ability to open the drivers side vent wing all the way because the mirror is in the way!

Good Gawd, Varni's Safari car has to be one of the coolest things I have seen all year! I believe those are a set of Halibrand Starmags.... About as rare as a wheel can get. I have been working on a set here in Phoenix for the last 5 years with someone who has no idea what they are.

Four of the four doors are rocking "factory" white walls so my guess is they are not all base models. I like the truck they are on as well. Long wheel base tractor with a tag trailer.

The start of a Falcon done right. 1962 Falcon Futura. Getting an 87 302 with forged pistons, head work and a cam backed by a 68 C4 with a stall.
