If I spent five grand on machine work for an engine, and it showed no machine marks where the heads had been resurfaced or the block resurfaced, I would take the testicles of the machinist and hold them hostage for four thousand dollars.

I think it was my ring gaps i put in were too tight. On a fresh bore new pistons and rings.....is that my fault for not checking them or is it the machist fault for not boring it correctly???

  4. Reading this story from you and the replies provided tell me "Don" has the best advice for you.
October 4th is quickly coming, TWO OF YOU are getting married on that day, not TWO OF YOU and a Cadillac.
This '53 may be sentimental to you, but you had better be getting your "future wife's input" on all this before October 4th, before there is no October 4th.
Sit down and think this all over ....... clearly.

What the machinist did, or should have done, is put the pistons on numbered rods & then bore each hole to be exactly right for the piston going into that specific hole, keeping in mind that manufacturing tolerances mean the pistons probably aren't exactly the same. The rings have manufacturing tolerances also plus each hole may be of slightly different sizes means you need to check the ring gaps. Some may be spot on in one cyl, too tight in another, & too wide in another, caused by the 2 variables. The question is...is the problem caused by too tight ring gaps? If so did you give the rings to the machinist so that he could check the gaps? Not sure off hand if he would have checked the ring gaps as a s.o.p. w/o being asked, I usually do that myself.

yes George I ***embled the whole motor. he bored it and had my pistons to make sure they fit. but, nevertheless I failed to check them and thinking being a fresh build on a fresh bore I wouldn't need to. that is the only explanation I can come up with. once I tear the motor completely apart this winter I might be able to diagnose it.

Sorry you didn't get the Cadillac done. Didn't you say you had a "back up" car? Did you use that car?
