Hot Rods First rod project (over my head)

  1. From the pics it looks like the hangers are well below the axle tube. A change to spring over will probably raise the rear 5" or so from where it is now. A frame cut is the only way to retain most of that.

  2. Yeah, I see what you mean, but a reverse eye will make it 4" ;)
Really anything that gets done to change the wheelbase on this chassis is going to require some re-thinking and reworking. But, right now he's got what appears to be a level ride height, so that 4" might result in an acceptable amount of rake as long as he doesn't go for terribly divergent rear tires. I think 4" ends up being about 1º-ish if I remember correctly (but it might be 2º).

    4/104 = .0385
    Inv. Tan = 2.20* angle

  4. Why do I need to learn trigonometry - I'm going to build hot rods and I will never ever use this stuff.

doing it one time does not make it traditional

True. Seeing it, and repeating it, is what makes it traditional.

  8. AHA, so I guess I wasn't remembering correctly! 2 degrees rake is fairly severe, yeah, perhaps not too much if you like and account for it, but I know when I was mocking up it felt way too much to me.

Hey, here's another idea, of the kick up is done with pie cuts rather than Tardell AV8 style and flip the spring hangers. The pie cutting would need to be plotted out to pull the crossmember in just so but as long as the driveline angles could still be set right, it might make for a good way to relocate the center of the wheels to the wells and allow for tall rear tires.

I have no idea where I want to go with this project as of yet (too new to the rod hobby) I used to be into Novas, Camaros, and Vegas back in the early 80's then family life, got into antique cars 3 years ago. I acquired this rod chassie last week which was under a Model A pickup cab I was interested in. After getting it home I got the bright idea of swapping my roadster body off my stock A chassie to the rod chassie and the pickup cab over to the stock chassie and WOW!! I fell in love with the look. I am thinking I want to build something really cool looking, very drivable, not butcher up that original roadster body, and have something everybody and their grandmother does not have. I will have to contact the guy who sold me this and find out what his vision was for this. I will pick up the how to book also. I like the idea of picking others brains rather than making expensive and time consuming mistakes. I really do not want to look back next year and say "what the hell did I do that for" when I will know whole lot more.

  11. It's an awesome feeling when a year from now you say OHH that's why it goes that way.

So who owns the old tin in your pictures?
They should be pretty fruitful as far as brain picking goes too

I picked up that 29 roadster "barn find" on ebay a couple weeks ago and it is hard to believe nobody has touched it in all these years, I think I may get that one running and leave it the way it is in it's original delapataded state.

  13. Well maybe put the truck body back on there and get it on the road so you can enjoy it then, at least until you get a really good idea where you want to go with it.
