Projects Truck into a coupe- My next pet project

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Dec 9, 2013.

  1. Yesterday at about 5:30 pm, I laid down for a quick little power nap.
Well That lasted till 1:30 am.
I'm thinking great, 1:30 in the morning and I'm wide awake, what the hell am I gonna do now ? Then I think oh yeah that's right.
Few days ago I started tacking in this side and had to leave it.
    image.jpg

I'm thinking I have zero interruptions , I can really get after this. Finished cutting in & tacking this side and the other. Cleaned all the tacks, hammer and bump it all just so. Started welding about 6 am. I was going along pretty good till about 9. I was hungry so I took a little break admiring my Weld grind hammer finish about 12" an hour. Then it starts ..... 10:00 my buddy stops by and pulls a hole shot at my door . He leaves and 11:30 I get the call from my girl-"honey my car won't start" . I went an rescued her then back at it for a little bit. Then I get another call, you need to get ready for the party, it starts at 4:00. Shit !!!!

    So that's it .

  2. Nothing exciting to show & not that I really wanted to yank the rear end out,
But I needed to get the wheel houses welded in to get all my clecos back so I can start the roof:) image.jpg

Wow! Just read the whole thing.
You've mentioned this is taxing your skills, but I'm sure those skills are improving every day working on this one. Nicely done and thanks for sharing all this.

  7. Thank you and your welcome !

  10. The rest of the tail pan and the trunk drip gutter.
It doesn't look like much, it's certainly not very exciting to look at.
Just one of those boring details that need to be done
It needs to fit the curves, actually catch a direct water, hold the trunk latch, blend the inside to the outside, provide strength and support and reinforcement to the tail pan and lower decklid, not many will ever see it but it still should look nice if they do.
Took me a bit longer than I thought to get it.

  11. The roof preliminary,
Got the reverse curve and window hammer form.
Thinking out loud with some straps and spring clamps.

  12. Got some ideas for making a buck for the roof down on paper today.
I'm digging it and it should work really well, happy with a plan.

Then later while cruising pics of old car stuff, I glanced at a 47-54 gmc hood and I saw most of the roof in that hood, weird how that happens.
    image.jpg

Anybody else see a big part of a coupe roof in that hood ?

So now I need to actually get my hands on one to measure as actually see it.

Have you given any thought to a different back window design since you have the top off? Maybe like 40 ford or willys or something else?

  16. Wow, and don't forget to build a place for your beer. Need some drain tubes.....and does a hot rod have freon ? Tastes great.....less filling. Love the resurrection. That car will kiss you when you're done.

Just taking all those pictures is a ton of work. I got rid of a pretty solid 34 coach because it was missing the lower 8 to 12 inches of car...still would have been way easier than what you have done. Wow.

  18. I just read thru your 40 willys thread again the other day, then your 33. Today I've been editing this thread of mine.

Coming from you sir that really means something. I'm guessing when I mentioned willys in this thread it caught your attention.

OK, I went back over the entire thread..........................Like I always tell people, once you start there's just no place to stop until it's finished. This project looks like one of those 72 hr restorations. Keep on keepin' on.

  21. Thanks man, I don't know about it being able to kiss me , but some days it really kicks my ass and makes me think.

  22. Thanks man!
Most of this old stuff is in need of the lower 8". Usually most of that stuff is available or easy to make. Some of that 33/34 patch and lowers is pricey though.

  23. Ha,ha - looks like it might be 72 weeks if I get my way. Good talking with you.

  24. No doubt its a challenge, and pushing your personal envelope is a good way to grow.

  25. Got the trans back from the rebuilder today.... Finally.
It's got the best of the best internals and is fitted with Buick switch pitch workings. The holdup was locating a really nice switch pitch pump. The 2 That I gave him weren't up to his standards. Some of the standard turbo 400 tricks and a few secrets my trans guy wouldn't tell me. The switch pitch converter was rebuilt and beefed up by my converter guys. When it told these guys to not cut any corners and build me the best that they could that's what they did. I have a st400 converter and a st300 converter. The st300 will stall higher than the st400 if I need it. Sucks not knowing but that's how this goes some times.

This means I can finish out the trans mount, firewall / trans tunnel and make the driveshaft.

  28. Yeah, I know what you mean.
3 posts is about the average attention span here.
You need to make it post 6 to see the 392, 7 for the frame, and all the way to post 19 to get to see the whole body.

Of course most would think this is just about polished trans case.
