Technical Building My 27 Roadster

    One of the coolest things about this build is all my friends helping me out. 2 of my close friends, Jacob and Galen, aren't into hot rodding a whole lot, but still come over to my house every few days to help me out. We busted out the frame Saturday, getting it painted and ready to re***emble.

    One of the most exciting things about this car is the paint. For the past 3 years, I've had my paint colors and interior colors picked out for a while. I was going for something similar to Evel's Live Wire coupe, 2 shades of blue with black and white interior. I was absolutely dead set on this color combo. Then, at the Queen City Riot in Springfield, MO, back in may, Adam Emery, @inkstain27, approached me about him painting the car but only if he gets to choose the paint color. This sounded like a horrible idea, but after about 20 minutes and maybe a couple beers, I said "Screw it. Why not?!" So... that's where I'm at on the paint. Adam even tagged me on Instagram with some paint colors he's been testing out.

    It doesn't really help me out. He also sent me a photo a while back of the paint can which just had a big ? on it. Basically, I have ZERO idea what color my car is going to be until I show up at his shop and pick up my body... and I'm totally cool with that. It's honestly probably going to be a color I never would have imagined and is probably going to look *****in. Hot rodding is about having fun and making friends and I'm doing just that.

    Every time I order parts I get as happy as a kid on Christmas. My wallet hates me but whatever.

    Thanks. Nailheads are awesome. So much torque! It's going to be a blast to drive. I can't wait to do burnouts with it hahaha

    My friend Jacob came over tonight and helped me get my front end mounted. We've got to finish up mounting the rotors and calipers and the shock set up. I ran all my brake lines before I tore the car apart to paint, so I have them laid out and ready to be bolted back in place. We'll see how much of that list I can get done tomorrow after work.

    I got my body put back into my ch***is tonight so I could work on the windshield posts. I picked up those smoothie style posts today. They look like they're going to fit pretty well without much altering to the body. The windshields going to be just tall enough to blow all the bugs in my face while going 65 mph down the highway.

    I picked up some Triumph Spider trunk hinges a while back so here's them just sitting here. Tomorrow I'm going to work on mounting them. I still need to get my gaps set on the deck lid. Since this is an aftermarket fibergl*** car, it was all set up with hidden hinges and no trunk handle. I didn't really care for that and I've always dug the look of chrome trunk hinges.

    I also wanted to add a flip top fuel cap, so I found this one a whole back and I'm going to be mounting it even with the deck lid on the quarter panel. I've got to finish these 3 jobs then cut my holes for my gauges and steering column and it's off to paint!

    This last weekend was super productive for my roadster. I spent all day Saturday at my last cl*** for my EMT cl*** (thank you Jesus) so my buddy, Jacob, came over about 5:30 in the afternoon to help me work on my car a bit. We ended up calling it a night at about 1 in the morning. The first thing we did was get the windshield mounts fit properly in the body.

    I made sure to measure multiple times and was able to drill the holes in the exact spot I needed for the posts on the first try. The hardest part was getting the driver side to match the p***enger side. Patience is a virtue. Next we were able to finish up mounting the taillights. I'm using 50 Pontiac tail lights. Since they didn't sit quite right on the body due to the curve of the back of the car, I figured I either needed to French them in or build up the body to give them a flat area to sit on. I figured I'd build up the body a little bit. I think it should look pretty cool.

    We also decided to add some fibergl*** to the floor and trans tunnel area. Since I have rather large feet, the gas pedal is going to be mounted right on top of the trans tunnel in the middle of the car. The tunnel was just a little flimsy for me, so we decided to build that up. It's much stronger now. I have come to realize that I really don't like working with fibergl***.

    I also started working on getting the holes cut for my gauges in my dashboard.

    The one issue that I ran into is trying to find a 5" hole saw for my speedometer. Them freakin things are expensive. Here's my speedometer I'm using. It's a 42 Ford speedometer. The older gentleman I bought it from said that it came out of one of the 42 Ford's built in the first few months of 1942 before Ford started building military vehicles. I think it's a pretty cool looking piece.

    Tomorrow I'm going to work on finishing the dash and hopefully get my steering column mounted, ***uming it comes in on FedEx. Getting closer and closer to having the body done!

  16. Maybe mount the gas cap farther in. Here's mine. Not a good picture I know. If you wanted a better picture I could take one.

    I remember checking that out at the HAMB Drags. I may have toss around that idea. Are those seats pretty comfortable? They look pretty killer.

  18. Not to bad. I drove it 3 hours to the HAMB Drags with one stop half way. Not much cushion on the bottom, so the ole **** gets numb. It's not a long distance car.

    I was able to get my gauges fit in my dashboard tonight. I have my speedometer mounted in the middle and my voltage gauge which will be switched out for a fuel gauge, oil pressure and temperature mounted to the right.

    I started working on mounting my steering column, which was quite tricky. I measured many, many times and was finally able to get a position that I liked for it. I started by drilling the firewall where I wanted the column to come out, then once I got that established, drilled the hole on the floor for the column to come through. I think I was able to get a pretty angle out of it to where it'd be the most comfortable. I'll put some photos up of it tomorrow night when I get it finished.

    Hope you have checked for engine clearance with the steering box, my T had a 241 Hemi in it before I got it and I had to offset my SBC 3/8'' to clear the F-1 box. JW

    Yea I did. I had a heck of a time trying to get the box to fit. The Buick Nailhead has the starter on the driver's side which gave me even more clearance issues. I have the Corvair box mounted on the frame rail in the gap between the two sets of header tubes. That was about the only mounting spot I had. The other clearance issue was on the floor board with my big feet. It took a lot of measuring to get the column over far enough to clear inside, but not too far over on the firewall to hit the back of the engine.
