Ok guys. I am currently building a 32 3w coupe (fiberglass body). It will be a traditional lakes style build. Im running a model A rear spring and a 35 ford rear end. I am also using the original radius rods.

My question is about my rear spring shackle. I no normally when you setting up your bracket you mount the shackle hanger approximately 1.5" to the out side of the spring. I am running into clearance issues and was wondering if i can mount the shackles to the inside of the spring or will i run into binding issues?
Below is a picture of where im thinking about mounting them.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

  2. That's just all kinds of wrong and I'm not sure where to start. Pretty sure its the last part of this post is where to start.

Stock Model a spring perches need to be 48-1/2 " apart. A posies narrowed A spring needs to have perches at 46-1/2"

A stock 36/36 will also have the perches at 46-1/2"

That means you should be able to hook a narrowed posies spring into the stock 35/36 bones and be done with that part of it. If it hits the frame or wrong ride hight means you'll be cutting or recalculating.

Those springs are designed to be mounted in tension. That means you'll need a spring spreader to hook the shackles into the spring and hangers.

  3. Brings to mind the phrase " upside down and backwards ". Start over and look at some pictures of completed set ups.

  4. Look at how this spring is mounted to the axel and the position of the hangers. And as 31Vicky said, if the spring hits the frame you've got some more work ahead.

I know they normally go to the out side. I just didn't know if it was possible to run them to the inside.

  6. You must mount the spring at the pre determined center to center perch requirement. There is no "inside or outside" . Also the spring must go under the hangers.

After some quick measuring. My spring perches are 48 1/2" apart. I was sent the wrong spring. The spring that was shipped to me was for a t-bucket. Not a model a. It only measures. 39" eye to eye. Guess ill be returning this spring tomorrow.

    Your after markets are loose
And the 35 rear bones will be 46-1/2

How wide is a T spring that's not mounted in a car but laying on the floor? How wide is an A spring? I'm asking because I just found one that the guy said was a T and it's about 39 1/2" c/c.

  13. All the '35-'36 axles I have measured are 48" on perch centers. Posies and their dealers seem to use a different measurement, don't know where or why they came up with that.

Stock perch centers on a Model A rear is 49-1/2"; but there is usually plenty of arch in a stock A spring to work with the 48" perch centers.

  14. Larry, a regular old used A rear spring measures around 40" center to center. Should be easy to tell tho as A and T springs have a different shape as well as the T's springs being 2" wide and the A springs are 2-1/4" wide.

AND, you may want to relocate the rear crossmember so that it's lower in the frame... I have been through this, I would locate the rear end with the (assumed closed) drive line to the transmission, then relocate the rear crossmember so the frame does not interfere with spring travel- and the spring can sit square to the crossmember...

Why not use the spring hangers on the rear end?
