I have a 73 Challenger with rust in the lower quarters and around the rear window I'm looking to have replaced. Also some custom metal work (shaved side markers, smooth bumpers etc.) Anyone know of a good shop in the New Jersey area that won't destroy my wallet? Thanks
You'd be lucky to find ANY body shop ANYWHERE who can do the kind of work you need at ANY price. Rust work is a fine art that requires not just skill but also the ability to care about the quality of the resulting repair. Most likely you'll need to find a restoration shop, not a body shop, to do the repairs. If you think this kind of work comes cheap you're only kidding yourself.
I feel sorry for anyone who has to pay other people to do this kind of work. I have seen actual auto body shops where they welded a piece behind a big hole and leveled it all off with bondo where it easily could have been done with no mud at all if they had taken the extra 5 minutes to make a patch that fit the hole. then there was the kitty hair "rust repair" another clown did. watched a guy put dimples with a hammer where he was filling trim holes "to hold the bondo". on and on. the clowns who will take your money and sculpt your car back into shape with mud far outweigh the people who will do it right....not that there is anything wrong with filler, but too many people use it to cover up crappy work.
Agreed, that's why I'm looking for recommendations of shops or individuals in my area. I had one shop ask if I wanted the rust cut out or just ground down and fiberglassed over....
Most "Body Shops" will not touch rust repairs including a friend of mine who owns a shop. The only law suits he's ever had were as the result rust repairs. Not worth the headaches. Much easier to replace a fender on a Toyota Corolla for an insurance job.
Where you from in Jersey? Up North, Phoenix is good, high dollar, but good, I saw you ask in another post. Out west, Lou Callisibetta is great, Old Stillwater Garage. Always busy, not cheap, but good work. I'm by Freehold, busy, but small jobs might sneak in.
I'm in North Jersey (Wayne area) but willing to travel, Freehold isn't far. What's the name of your shop, I'll give you a call.
Rust repair is a body shop's PITA now days. Few mess with it, unless it's a labor of love. Any reputable restoration shop should be able to do it right. Expect to pay more for that expertise.
