Ok so I've done many searches and went to many websites to run the numbers on my straight six. It's in a 1950 chevy deluxe with powerglide so pretty sure it's a 235 but my question is has anyone every had a motor that couldn't find matching cast numbers? Mine is HAD328391 Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've got a write-up that says a 1950 Chevy with a prefix of "HDA" is a 235. Yours is clearly "HAD". so maybe the write-up I have is incorrect or yours was stamped incorrect (unlikely), but in any event, I'd bet my money on it being a 235. Is the side cover surround the sparkplugs (216) or is it below the sparkplugs (235) ? Doesn't show in your pic. The engine block casting number 3692703 was in a Powerglide equipped car. Number 3835497 was used for 216 cars & trucks and 3629708 was used in trucks with 235 engines.
Early 235s look like the 216 with the long side cover. Only the full pressure 235s (1953-1962) has the short cover.
not from what I've seen...and not what the parts book says, either. It says all 216 had the tall cover, all 235 had the short cover. group 9.439 http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/1929_57chevyparts/images/57cmpc0141.jpg
All 216's had the tall side cover, 235's from '41 through '49 also had the tall side covers. But beginning in 1950, all 235's had the short cover, including the '50 - '53 splash oiled 235's. The "H" in your prefix is 1950 but I can't find the full HAD prefix anywhere. If your engine has a short side cover - it's a 235.
Donut, Matching? Matching casting numbers to what? You are speaking of stamping numbers and casting numbers. Two different sets of numbers. If you have an original Powerglide, with the original engine, you will have a 235, if the engine has not been swapped out.. In 64 years since birth, many changes could have happened. Let's forget about the stampings by the distributor for a moment. Look at this link, you will see the location of the CASTING NUMBER for the early 235, under the fuel pump mounting. http://www.langdonsstovebolt.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/235_261_50_TO_54_CASTING_NUMBER_PIC.jpg If that casting number is 3692703 or 3692708 or 3692713, you have a 1950 to 1952 235. If you do not have any of the above numbers, list what you do have, from that casting area.
