I did search. I want a color that is maroon/burgundy that looks like it is almost BLACK! So I am including a pic of a hot rod that is in the shade. Actually even darker if possible. color1.jpg
I know this car is a lighter color in the sun, but I am looking for a color like what this color looks like in the shade. Again, a little darker would be better. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

`66 Mustangs had a color called "Vintage Burgundy Metallic", I think. Saw it mixed without the metallic and it was killer! If you want it darker, just have your paint store keep adding black until you get what you want.

  9. Depends on how dark towards black you want and how much lightening you want.

Try a PPG color called Merlowe. I think that's what they called it, anyways!?

Candy red over black base? I sprayed model cars this way when i was a kid. Very subtle, only caught the red in certain light.

Go to your local paint supplier and ask to see his dark burgandy color decks.
Wander thru them til ya find the tone and shade ya want. Have em mix ya up 1/2 pint. do a spray out on a black and white spray out card, and see if ya like it. It's that simple

You can look at a color I think was called Black Cherry for a 1989 Dodge Daytona. We used to call it Eggplant it was so dark. Also the late model Toyota FJ Cruiser has a similar color available. I'm sure the paint store can mix anything you want, but I try to stay with a factory color that is easier to duplicate later.

This is your best bet. They can even mix you up a special mix with different toners to your liking. The ones I have been in are eager to help because they love mixing colors.

Brady, I like the way you are thinking. I am wrestling between Black, Maroon or a Cherry Black type color that you are in search of. Be sure to post some pictures when you have come to a final mix/color decision.

used on the pick up trucks ..
this is what we used on the O/t racecar , to make the color darker you use a black primer , and the more coats the darker the car got and nicer it looked in the sun , we also added some superfine red and blue metal flake ( about 1/8 total of a teas**** to the whole mix and it really popped . people thought the car was purple when it was partly cloudy , but it would turn almost black when cloudy and then when the sun came out it started to change color . then he wrecked it and painted it viper red . ugh .

I hope I didn't mislead anyone. I am not ready yet. I think color is extremely important and should not be taken lightly. Just trying to find "The" color that I like most. Thanks for all the help.

  24. Thanks-
There's a thread or two of mine on it.
No it's not black cherry, its the results of experimenting. A custom process & a bit unorthodox and the fender is a test to see how it holds up. A few thought it would fail so It's been outside 24/7 with no attention for over a year now. Holding up fine- unfortunately the project I want to paint is waiting while the process is going thru its test .

The above pic is taken outside in the morning as the sun just fully cleared the horizon. This is also but different angle .

Good advice on the test panels, some of the factory colors tend to a brownish hue versus black in sunlight which I personally don't care for as much.
