Thank you,yes Eric is happy with the Martz we had that car for 30 plus years and just wanted a change.Incidently we purchased the Martz in complete but unrestored from Buck Boudeman who just passed away last week !

I sure haven't had a chance to read all 743 pages of this thread yet but what I have read is fantastic. In fact it has started me on a mission I'll probably regret. While I really love the early sprint cars for their design, finish and engineering, there is something about the period that I grew up with that resonates with me. I know it is off topic for this thread so just say so and I won't persist, but I'd love to build a period sprint car that fits my dreams as a kid. The era is around mid '70s to maybe '82.

My hero was Graeme McCubbin. He was an Aussie and a national champion. I was just reaching double digits when I watched him race so my memory isn't fantastic but stuff is strangely coming back. The first thing the other day was the name Stanton. I couldn't remember ever seeing that name but it was in my head so I googled it and sure enough, there was Garry Stanton. I little more searching and yes McCubbin had driven a Stanton. I've been looking for pics but I think Aussies are notably bad at uploading history to the internet. I have found a couple of pics so first up... can anyone confirm whether these cars are Stantons? If not, what are they?

Boy, does that photo bring back some memories Pete. I crewed on various sprint cars in that era with Rowley Park and later Speedway Park being my home tracks. Also went to Warnambool, Portland, Mt Gambier, Tarlee, Paramatta etc.

I think you are correct, those are Stanton chassis. You might check out the VINTAGE SPRINT CAR group on Facebook, there is a lot of stuff from the 1970's-1990 there.

I grew up next door to Vic and spent a lot of time in his garage. The car is a stretched midget. Vic put the hemi in the car before the Chevy v8 came out. He once commented that he would have used a Chevy if it had been available.

 

Anyone have any knowledge of Sammy Packard? Not the stuff you can google, but I'm interested in the Sprint Cars he's supposed to have restored in the seventies, apparently while residing in Florida.

 

October 3, 1954, Salem, Ind. AAA heat race lineup. I was there, just having started my junior year of high school. I had met all these guys. Racing was brutal in those days. Only one of them survived the 60s. Front row: #31 Larry Crockett (March 20, 1955 - Langhorne); #18 Eddie Sachs (May 30, 1964 - Indianapolis). Second row: #1 Pat O'Connor (May 30, 1958 - Indianapolis); #3 Mike Nazaruk (May 1, 1955 - Langhorne). Third row: #99 Jerry Hoyt (July 10, 1955 - Oklahoma City); #6 Jack Turner (flipped a couple of years in a row at Indianapolis and retired).

Turner may have flipped a third year, I'm not sure. In 1961 and 1962 he flipped on the main straightaway and I saw both of them.

Pat O'Connor was my first racing hero. He was racing "hardtops" at Jeffersonville for Justin King when I was selling racing papers and befriended me.

Josh,I am searching for a 1957 era chev.sprint dry sump engine set up to run on alky,I have hilborn and mag thought I might buy a good engine for less than building one,any leads appreciated.It goes in my 56-57 Helligas wide body .

 

Never in my dreams did I think I would be a Midget enthusiast but a few weeks ago I was at an auction and picked up 2 midgets that has turned me forever to a fan. Here are a couple of pics.

I did the research on the #6 and while I never found pics of the car, 4 of the 5 drivers were midget hauler of famers Paul Russo went on to win several Indy 500's. Enjoy!

Is it just me, or does that look like an inverted Edsel grill? Makes me wonder about the car's pedigree...

 

Yes the grille and the seat back set up for shoulder harness and the apparent splayed quarter elliptical front spring make this an interesting dichotomy.

He drove in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series, racing in the 1940–1941, 1946–1954, 1956–1959 and 1962 seasons with 85 starts, including the Indianapolis 500 races in each year but 1951 and 1952. He finished in the top ten 49 times, with 3 victories: at Springfield (1950), Detroit (1951) and Williams Grove (1952). His best finish in the Indy 500 was fourth in 1957, and he co-drove with Tony Bettenhausen to a second-place finish in 1955.[1]

Yea # 92, I bought that from a local guy {Pittsburgh} about 8 yrs ago. I put a distributor & a few things on it & got it running. Ran good, smoked a little!. Sold it on EBAY to a guy from Minn. The car was built in the 70's to run in some vintage races. The car was never raced, It has NO racing history. Not a bad little car thou. It has a cut down 32 Chevrolet grille, Norden steering, CAE gearbox. I put a motorcycle battery under the seat.,for the ignition. You will probably have to charge it. Model T front axle & a Model A banjo rear. Enjoy!!!
