  1. Aarrggggghhhhh.....my eyes! Why oh why does Gmail feel the need to tell me there's a new post on the thread, then when I click to see what's up, I get the full moon shot of the bucket of ugly?!?!?!?

Landsendadair finding a gallon of orange paint for Chip. Kiwi helping Tim. Is this not old time hot rodding at it's best? I know this the internet but it is just the newest way to get guys together with the hobby they/we love.
I spent yesterday afternoon at my new old friend Bob Reed's (one of the early LA Roadster club members) annual BBQ. Chip you met him at LARS this year. I didn't take any pictures of his shop either. Wish I had now. It is great. He has a bitchin full fendered T tub. I'll get a picture of it next time I see it. Kinda new style for this thread (Jag. independent suspension) but I don't think Chip will mind me posting it though.

Absolutely, internet has it's good and bad sides, but it expands our horizons when it is used in the right way and allows people from all across the globe, that have similar interests to connect, when otherwise we would not have the opportunity..........I love it :D

Actually, I wasn`t as much help to Tim as I had hoped. The Firewall I found for him was a 23-25 one, and he needs a 17-22 one. But we will get one. Albany Swap Meet, or, if that fails, I have a few other resources, and I also need to get moving on my own project....

Fellas...I was just zipping around the `Net and found that someone is selling copies of the original Bird Automotive T Bucket Plans from the early Sixties. Does anyone have those? Are they any good, or are they as sketchy as those old ads in Hot Rod looked? Being from New Zealand, that stuff was out of our Experience , but then, Rob Campbell unloaded Project T on us in New Zealand Hot Rod Magazine in 1972. The country blew up with young guys building their own. Not exactly Trad, but pretty basic and cool, and more a sixties vibe than a Fad style, thankfully. Any Kiwi`s have copies of those articles? They might be neat to share on here....

I will do my level best to remember to check on Wednesday, but I think one of my customers has one hanging from his wall, and all of his stuff if high cowl. I'll do my best. The second thought though is just use the high cowl that you have for a tracing and make something appropriate from, say 3/16" aluminum. As far as I know the two types have the same basic contours, just different heights.

SANY0100.jpg A guy was selling some T cowls at Good Guys Pleasanton this spring. I saw them and meant to go back and buy an early one but forgot. I had my brotherinlaw buy one the next day. I think he bought a 23-25 though. I haven't got it from him. If it is what you need I'll let you have it.

Paul, I'm gearing up for the Albany swap meet for sure! Looks like it's on the 15th. If you end up going with Bruce, are you guys gonna try to get one of the "Do not return to our event with your conduct" formal letters from the event committee? Hahaha. That was probably my favorite thing I saw all weekend. "Especially your behavior at the front gate." I wish I could have been there to see it all go down!

Chip, if you do remember to check out that firewall, and it is indeed the early low cowl one, let me know! I think the early firewalls are narrower as well as shorter since we measured a 23-25 firewall this weekend and compared that to a 17-22 roadster that was already put together.

Gary, I do not need a cowl at the moment, but I do need an early firewall. I'm assuming that post was directed toward me. If not, disregard!!!

Sorry Tim it was meant for you. I misunderstood. I forgot a lot of you guys are going for the older look and using the old firewalls. If though you are going for the '50s'60s look just find a piece of aluminum, cut it and polish it.

Chip, does Fred's Fun Run still happen in November in lower Arizona? I sorta remember it as being a large gathering of buckets.

That's the cool thing about all this!
...And yes, PLEASE post the pictures of Bob's touring. I'm getting down to the short strokes on Roy's touring chassis for the full fendered car as we speak.

My new, old best friend Bob's Touring and more from his garage. He throws out names like Dan Woods, Little John Butara, Eddie Martinez, Carson Top Like they are his best friends. And I think they all are. All the names he mentioned helped build the Touring. The green 34 was his first car that he bought in the early '50s when he was 12. The Stude. is 500 Cad. powered and blown. Every car in the painting he owned when it was painted. All that and he is a great guy.

Holy crap! I just put the name and the Dan Wood's built C-cab in the painting together!!! That was an awesome truck, and I spent way too much time staring at the feature and Wood's detail drawings of it. My buddy Dave Hill's '27 T-bucket was featured in the same issue, so it is "top of pile" in the reading room of my home...

I know Holy Crap is an understatement. Bob likes to talk about all his stuff and former stuff but it isn't a bragging way. Just a natter of fact way. I have to pinch myself. I know this guy and am helping him work on his flathead powered magneto sparked '48 Ford Moordoor that he raced some biggies in the '60s.

I wish! Nope, it's urethane... Sucks 'cause I know I can't personally shoot it because of my allergies. But my buddy Ronnie Olmstead has volunteered to shoot it for me, and I am going to take him up on that because he has been one of the Valley's go to hot rod painters for about fifty years now. I know he will also keep me on a tight schedule when a window of time opens.

It is a bit lighter orange than I would like, something more like an Omaha Orange like the De'Benedictus roadster rather than the Hugger Orange that I wanted. My plan is to take it into the main Napa warehouse here where their paint shop is (It's Current stock Martin Senour/Napa) and see if they can add a bit of straight orange toner to it to come up with what I want. If not, I think it may be just fine the way it is. Omaha Orange has always been a second choice for me.

I like Omaha orange. Popular Period colour for early sixties too. My regular computer went blooie today, black screen of death, so I will be less active for the next little while. Posting this on my wife's ipad.

Please dont kill me, but is Hugger Orange the paint used on Chevy Engines had?

I actualy likes that colour, and Think about using it for undercarrige parts.
Over here races with a high budget, used to paint the body White underneth and do the parts in aborter colour. I Think about doing orange body and Black parts.
Its for my gasser build, not a bucket.

Any progress on the car, chip?

When does you plan to paint it?

Omaha looks good. To me hugger has a bit less red in it than Chevy engine orange. If you look at my coupe album shots, you can notice the difference. Can't wait to see the bucket in color!

You could do a lot worse than a color like the DeBenictis roadster. Don't make me post another picture of it.

The older I get the more interested I am in the authenticity of whatever subject or issue at hand. In this case, Omaha Orange. So, since so many of Chip's buds are convinced that the "right" color for his bucket is Omaha Orange, I set about looking for the "real" Omaha Orange hue. Not so easy as I discovered...

Great pics Gary. Early 70's Rod magazines is where I learned to read, so those 2 T's really turn my crank.

Hey Steel Rebel, Is your buddy Bob Reed the same guy that opened "The Chrome Shop" in Oklahoma in the early eighties? Just thought about that...

No don't think so. He owned a butcher shop/market in L.A. (Country Butcher} from the '50s through the '90s. Wish you could sit down and talk to him Chip. He's "been there done that" With everybody in So.Cal. for all those years.

Ya, I didn't think so, but thought it could be. I remember seeing picture of the inside of the market, and a Von Dutch striped cash register and signs.
