Just picked up a NOS Mickey Thompson small block Chevy aluminum block. Any info out there on how many of these blocks were actually cast?

  2. Dude. Where in the hell do you guys find this shit ?? How about some pictures please ?

Mickey Thompson did a lot with aluminum blocks. Some were cast for boats, some for drag cars, some for Indianapolis, and some for land speed racing. The Challenger car ran Pontiacs I think..... Indy was small block Chevrolet I believe, and hell.....who knows what and how many he did of anything? He was amazing. Threw away more shit then most will ever own.

I sure hope someone gives you a better answer then my gibberish here.....this is all just Smokey Yunick regurgitation....from one of my legends of speed series. Mickey, Al Maynard, and Smokey....were always playing with exotic alloys....trying to stick it to ya'....humna humna humna....all the way to the checkered flags. If it worked it stayed....

  10. Saw one many years ago at a swap meet in Indianapolis. Couldn't afford it then, can't afford one now. That is very cool, the ultimate M/T collectible

The bores would have to be sleeved.

I wonder if the main caps were steel or aluminum.

I agree the Mickey Thompson block is cool but I still like my aluminum Can-Am big block more. Experimental side oiler with dual pickup oil pump and wacky timing cover with built in oil pump. Same type of block that Jim Hall ran in the Chaparral 2J "sucker" car. Mine was run by Charlie Hayes in his #98 McLaren Elva Mark II during the Mont-Tremblant race in Quebec, Canada on 11/9/66. It has his initials stamped in it along with 427...001. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll post a few pics of that as well.

Yes, still needs sleeves installed. Not sure if the caps were originally steel or aluminum but I have some new custom made caps to fit the block so no problems there. Haven't decided what to do with it yet. Might just stick my no-name SBC Hemi heads or Duggan heads on it for now just for laughs.

  16. Great find! I do have a question though: Is that a crack in the block just above the M/T logo or a casting flaw?

Man that is an old casting as it still has the crankcase vent / breather fitting / road draft at the back of block near the distributor. GM started phasing them circa 1963 to 1967 when they went to PCV valves.

Now, that is cooler than all hell and damned well is NOS. With what Mgtstumpy pointed out in post 20 it is extremely HAMB friendly too.
I'd have that thing in a glass case with those two sets of heads sitting beside it even If I had to go out and buy a glass case.

  22. Too bad you can't find some of his 3 valve heads......wow....that block is incredible. Great coffee table, or wall hanger....lol. I dunno' if I would ever run it, and to be honest....it would be really hard for me to keep it. The curiosity of advertising, and auctioning may very well do me in. There are better blocks to run, just to run one.....but having said that....it will be cool no matter what you do.

Actually, I do know where some 3 valve heads are. That's the next deal I'm working on.

Pics of the Can-Am big block with wacky timing cover and dual pickup oil pump. Note the oil passage running along the driver side of the block. There are 2 holes that I still need to drill for the oil to run through to the timing cover.

  25. Damn. CanAm block has had some fun. Pretty cool collection man.

Don't get me wrong....the easy way out is always to make money....but there are some guys with glints in their eyes.....that would have no problem ironing either one of them out. Hard core machinist loves both. Awesome stuff.

Yeah, the Can-Am block went about 7 laps before it went BOOM! But that's okay, I'm still going to do my best to fix it because I think it would make a sweet street motor or something to fire up and idle in a test stand. And I agree, the easy way out is to make money. But I love collecting and preserving history which is why I'm trying to salvage the Can-Am block and will finish off the Mickey Thompson block. I still have a lot more crazy and really weird stuff over here that would probably fill up several pages of photos. Probably best I don't fill this one up too much.

Please do post pics of more "weird stuff", I am salivating all over myself.........so jealous of the guys that have all of the ultra cool stuff that, somehow, seems to fall into their laps :rolleyes:o_O I know that it is just being well connected to the right people, but it is easier on me to just think it is blind luck that gets all of that cool stuff.
