Well, after 14 months of cutting, welding, and a lot of hammering, I took the first drive in my 55 year longing for a Ford Coupe of my own! Much to my surprise, it drives like a true Hot Rod. The little warmed - 635036956446207855_zpsf215e74f.jpg 001.JPG 003.JPG over 302 Ford motor and 4-speed hums along nice and will roar when the 850 DP holley is opened up. First time I nailed it and ran it through the gears , I was 16 again(for a brief moment). Worth all the aches and pains an old man earns when he crawls around on cold cement, dirt falling in my eyes. The real payoff is when a much younger than I lady notices my Hot Rod and smiles and waves. (I can dream, can't I ??)

I know the feeling well, congrats. I looked at the pictures for awhile trying to figure out why I felt something was out of place. The front wheels need to go and the one piece side glass makes it look short. When you get the hood and running boards on it will probably look better. Again, congratulation now drive the wheels off if it.

  4. Congratulations, the car looks great,I'm sure you have a wheel change in mind so we won't say anything about them.

Get out there and enjoy the hard work. HRP

Side glass is stock, I think, for 39. Looks good, anything you can do to feel 16 again is worth it!

Nothing better than progressing to the driving stage. Kind of fond of the ventless 39 windows myself. Major appearance improvement over vent windows.

I noticed the Minnesota plates, not the wheels! Very cool car!

  15. Like it--nothing like taking one down the road for the first time. As others noted, '39 didn't have vent windows, those came out for the first time in '40.

Oh yes, the front wheels. I had a set of ss cragars for it, did not clear the front fenders. So i was desperate and tried my grand daughter's Mustang wheels. They fit so are good enough for a test drive.
I am still working on the running boards right side exhaust, and a dozen other things, but I just had to drive it to get motivated. Thanks for the nice review.

So you took your granddaughters wheels off of her Mustang? Hahaha
Don't think any of us thought they were your choice of wheels. Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do..

  22. I like your coupe. A 39 Deluxe is one of my top 5 favorite cars of all times.

  23. Congratulations, that first drive is a real milestone.
'39 Deluxe, and '40 Standard, are high on my list of favorites.

PS It has to be a GREAT granddaughter that readily parts with wheels from her Mustang to help out her granddaddy!

Well I done went and did it. Gave my 1939 Ford deluxe coupe with the 283 & Powerglide to my oldest son. I've had it since the mid 70's and looks like I'll never git er done. Moving back to Illinois and thinin the herd. At least I can help him put it back on the road.
Yours looks super fine. I love the color.

Yes, it is a 1939 Ford Deluxe coupe. with '40 headlite trim. the color is the same as my 1960 T-Bird I traded straight across for this coupe, MonteCarlo Red acrylic enamel. I may just get a pair of the spun aluminum racing discs from speedway to screw onto the front wheels and call it good for now.

You may be surprised at how many re-pro parts are available for the 39 deluxe. I knew 40's were available, but surprised at how much could be had re-pro.
