I haven't posted anything on my '53 Ford for some time now. Recently I made some progress and it should be on the road next year. Here are some shots of the "dog house" in the raw and finished state. The 460 is finally getting all of the accessories installed, along with a US Gear overdrive behind the C-6 trans. Side tool boxes are being installed for the last time. IMG_4980.JPG IMG_4984.JPG IMG_5010.JPG IMG_5013.JPG IMG_5018.JPG IMG_5017.JPG

  3. Marty, I don't know what you have in mind for cooling, but 460s like to produce lots of heat. I had one in a Stude pick-up and it nearly drove me crazy trying to keep it from boiling.

I don't foresee any cooling pro 53 COE.jpg blems, it has a large frontal area for air movement, and no restriction for the hot air to escape. I bought a new radiator for a 460 pickup, and plan on using a large OEM clutch fan with a shroud. The COE grille is 10" longer between the headlights than a pickup. We will find out next Summer. Thanks Geets

  6. You are probably OK, the Stude had a quite small grille opening with a very full engine compartment.

Hi Marty. Looks like your going to have a very nice COE when finished. They are a blast to drive. Of all my vehicles, my wife like the 47 cab-over best. Look forward to seeing the finished product.

I used a 1979 E350 bread truck chassis on this one. On a '48 Ford COE I used a mid-70's Dodge Motorhome chassis. If you want it to set low,(drape the body over the frame) I would probably use the Dodge chassis. The box on this one dictated the cab height, and I got two bread trucks for free. They were used in the Tommy Lee Jones movie "The Hunted", and one had been rolled.

Nice work Marty, I see you kept the cab a bit higher relative to frame so the engine does not intrude so much into the cab.

My 49 COE has a generic alum radiator across the core support and runs right at thermostat temp all the time. Whatever the width between the sheetmetal, my radiator is fins for all of that opening width. Even have A/C and still runs cool.

If you already have an E350 chassis, I would set the '55 body on it and take a look. I am unfamiliar with the physical height of the diesel engine, and that would be the limiting factor for me. If you look at these pics you will see that I could have shortened the front body mount, and set the body 4" lower. In my case, I wanted to retain the bench seat and keep the "dog house" height to a minimum. Also, if you look at the picture of the t IMG_5117.JPG IMG_5119.JPG IMG_5120.JPG ruck in it's original blue paint, you will see the running boards are level with the bottom of the cargo box. When finished, I am going to build something similar to a tilting trailer frame (complete with fold out ramps and a winch) that I can install in the box. The frame will be removable in minutes with a fork lift. When installed, I can haul a race car or hotrod inside, or remove it for parts hauling and swap meet duty. It will make a handy hauler for up here in the rain country.

I'll say it, it's hideous! I respect the work but there's no balance to the design.

  21. daddio, I respect your opinion, but can you explain balance? I like it because it is different, I'm bored by most every car at a show looking like one I've already seen somewhere before. so the "unusual" catch my attention. (Oh look, a squirrel, type of thing)

I can see the relation to the Mack Dog and the squat nose. It has that Bulldog look you would have to grow to love just like you would if you owned a Bulldog. He has done well to keep it all in proportion.

  27. About the best I could get while in moving traffic today; on 290 heading towards Austin around 1 hour ago.

Back it the 60s my dad drove one of these (Chevy version) with a 409 in it. Rod bearings were good for about 10,000 miles. GM tried everything to get it to hold together, new block, align bore, new crank a couple times, nothing helped.

  29. The brown one that willysbill posted--- Anybody know what it's powered by? I see it's rear engined and those look kinda porsche-ish wheels.
