Technical Hudson overdrive not working

So I parked my 51 Hudson Super Six during some extreme cold/snowy weather and now the o/d doesn't work. Worked fine prior to sitting for 2 weeks. It's the factory three on the column with electric o/d. Any suggestions?

very likely the solenoid has some old grease that is inhibiting movement of the engagement shaft. It would be best to remove it and examine/clean it. Remember, after removing the bolts, you have to turn it 90 degrees to disengage the end of the shaft.

if the solenoid could not move properly, it may have lead to a blown fuse.

 

the fuse is part of the relay. It should be on the firewall.

 

Mine is on the firewall. Old style gl*** 30 A Buss.

 

Thanks for the info. I do know the relay you are talking about. Decent weather tomorrow so hopefully I get it figured out. I was wondering about the solenoid. This is my first Hudson with o/d so I'm still learning it. Only had this one since Labor day.

#1 check the fuse
#2 check ground wires and all connections involved - very important especially if it's still 6 volt!
#3 if it has a handle under the dash to disagage the OD check to make sure it's in the correct position.
My opinion that it's either the fuse or a weak ground since it was working ok prior to being parked. The solenoid pulls 30 amps to engage the OD and with 6 volts and running a generator a good ground is a must!

Check the contact points in the solenoid and governor as well as the connections to them. 90 percent of BW OD faults can reside there.

 

Plym 46 has some good info. The solenoid is the first place to check. If oil gets in there it will not work. Just clean it good and it should start working. Hope this helps. LHud

 

Pull the fill plugs on both ends of the trans - fill with 85/90w gear oil til it drips from both holes.

 

Remember the PUSH-PULL cable, IN is OD capable, OUT is LOCKED OUT for a regular 3 speed.

 

Checked fuse and cleaned all electrical connections. Pulled solenoid cleaned it up good and bench checked it. Worked good. Put solenoid back on and me and my 6yr old sidekick daughter took it for a spin and it works like a champ again. HALLELUJAH!!! Thanks for all the info. It was a huge help.
