Building a car for a Couple that are moving to Australia ,My question is what do we have to change on the car to be legal in Australia, it's a 37 Chevy street rod.
I'm out on the East Island, so probably not much help. Australia has strict import rules for modified cars, from what I gather, nothing modified allowed. I'm sure Aussy Hambers can give you a better answer.
You should be asking them what the requirements are as not all states of Australia have the same licensing laws. Secondly are they allowed to import the car as our import laws changed a few years back. I just reread your post if they are an American couple migrating to Oz and its their own car bringing it in shouldn't be a problem. Tell them to contact the Australian Immigration Dept on what the procedure is, don't take my word for it as things could have changed. Just a tip, build it with right hand side steering it will make life easier. I bought a 34 coupe out of California and apart from changing the steering from left to right hand side the car was pretty much as we build them here on the West Coast of Oz. The coupe has been licensed since Easter no problems. Which state of Australia are they moving to?
That's an enormously open ended question. This should should help. It's the govt. approved street rod construction guidelines for most states. http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&r...xoKYDA&usg=AFQjCNG6ZMrV62Mf0FDuBXNkieoNBufvvg
As of a few years ago, anything modified after 1989 (or thereabouts) will not be allowed in. Having said that, some LHD rods have slipped through (good luck to them). I Think you will find if it is imported incomplete, that is as 2 seperate shipments, it is cl***ified as "incomplete", and can be re-***embled after entry. There are conditions as to what "incomplete" are, as in a running ch***is is one ***embly, and thebody can be another. Do your homework, and let us know how you went.
They are moving to Victoria She is from there , and X38 I did read the guidelines. Right hand drive was one of my questions, I was thinking the guidelines where for Australia Not if it was shipped in, also cats on the exhaust is that a must? Looking at the guidelines a lot of the rules are like NSRA and is not a problem, what about chopped tops and windshield height. Thanks
If emigrating not an issue, if returning as Ozzie citizens they need to have owned and used it for 12mths unless it was built pre-1989 and can prove that. Quite a few people buy hot rods, dis***emble them over there and then re***emble once here. Customs are aware of this practice and monitor imports even if cars are in parts and in 2 x separate containers, they aren't as naive as they used to be. Parts require no import approval, however cars do require an import approval. Then there is all the add on costs, quarantine, shipping agent, GST prior to release. Then it needs to be engineered to meet our safety criteria, each state is different as they haven't all signed up to the National guidelines. To satisfy criteria as parts it needs to be just that, parts. Make sure they dot the 'I's and cross the 'T's and don't cut corners. We are in the construction now still can make it RHD and what ever else may need to be done just hated to see them spend all this money and can't get it there.
More, but broadly speaking no AN (37) brake lines (Must be 45 / bubble flare), open headers, slicks, chrome suspension (Without heat treatment certificate for hydrogen embrittlement), bomber seats and seat belts, open wheels (must have fenders of sorts), no subframe clips or heim joint suspension (Have seen older cars get through with clevises) DOT approved seat belts in all seating positions(Lap sash in open cars, 3pt in closed car), 4 wheel brakes required, quality engineering. Headlamps / bulbs may need to be changed to RHD (Dip left on low beam), must have trim and paint (Although some get through without however these are in the minority), tandem brake master cylinders (Boosted is good) Your optional NSRA checklist is not optional here, many things are mandatory items. Depending on where they base themselves there could be a proposal to build form and possibly an engineer to scrutinize things prior to registration. I could waffle on, lots of things to consider. If you build to National guidelines you should be OK. Better still, contact the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) National co-ordinator and run things past him as he will advise accordingly on the inspection process and what needs to be done. http://www.asrf.org.au/?page_id=15
Yep do your homework and hopefully it will all work out easily for everyone concerned. mgtstumpy do you think it would be worthwhile contacting the Victorian TAC as that's where the car will be going to. This is a true story. About 20 odd years ago a South African migrating to Australia asked the Aussie authorities would it be worthwhile bringing his 68 Chevy to Aust. They replied yes as we don't have Chevs here. When he got it here he saw them eveywhere. What he had was a Holden built in Oz rebadged with Chev badges for the South African market that we exported to them.
All I can add if it's going on club rego, it's way easier and cheaper to do that way. Once here join a club that has "red plate" rego available. Then club members can help guide you on ways for easy way to get it on the road here Rego is a $100 + club membership a year or so compares to $700 a year for full rego costs. Going to Victoria means you are going to the best state as far as Hotrod rego goes in this country, and I'm a ex Queendslander. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Heard recently that in the New Year all cars going for club reg must require a RoadWorthyCertificate [RWC].As for engineers certificate, they all have different views, wipers [pivots]changed to RHD,collapsible steering columb,no grinding of Welds,i can go on. I'm in Victoria and a friend just got a 50'S Chev, chopped roof,bagged,350/350 combo imported into Melb,no probs.IMO,get it done here,it aint worth the stress of saving a few quid !
It couldn't hurt, I know Mark has handled queries from a few over the ditch (NZ) coming here with their cars and pointed them in the right direction. Peter KONING is also very knowledgeable as well, if you bounce ideas of them both it can't hurt. Those Ozzie export Holdens were officially the only RHD factory Chevrolets available after GMH stopped bring in CKD Impalas from Canada. The Holdens had different sheet metal, front fenders, tail lamps. HQ utes were sold as El Caminos with 292s not the smaller Ozzie 202. Also Kommandos or something similar. Are they returning to Oz or emigrating here?
She is returning He has already got he's Citizenship done. I have a lot of work to do on the car, just wanting to have a plan on making it easy for them. He also has a 68 Camaro he would like to ship, But that may me harder than the 37 Chevy because it is a finish car?
If the camaro is stock standard he'll have no trouble getting that in as his personal car. Us aussies importing cars from the U.S. is different to a U.S citizen moving to Oz bringing a car in. Like I said earlier check with immigration for their advice on bringing your personal cars into the country. We would all like to know what they say. Email Peter Koning he's in Victoria and may be able to help you out more. He is Victoria's Technical Advisory Committee rep for street rods. Koning.peter.c@gmail.com Good luck
I have been working on it , hoping to have it running for Cruisin The Coast in October, then we will see when they move
