Was wondering if any one was using a 55-57 chevrolet bellhousing behind a Tremec TKO 5 speed . Here's why i ask was using the hurst front mount for a small block chevy in a 40 Ford and didn't know if i needed the mid support bellhousing mount as well. If you run the hurst front saddle mount do you need the mid mount as well ???. That is why i asked about the 55-57 bellhousing it has the mounts built in Thanks.
I dont know about hooking it up to the 5 speed.however the PK bellhousings from 55 thru 66 all have mounts built in .They are easier to find than a tri five bellhousing.
General rules: If you have front mounts, you need bellhousing mounts and no trans mount. If you have trans mount, you need side engine mounts
I'm running a Hurst mount and T5 with the 55 bell housing, not using the side mounts, I used the trans mount on the T5, works great.
Thanks guys i was thinking i had to run both i have a transmission mount but thought i needed the bellhousing mount as well with the hurst mount. Thanks
You are not wrong in your thinking on this subject. Especially with the typical aluminum bellhousings, many of which have no lower section. They are more prone to 'sag'. In your application, however, using the quite strong Chevy cast iron housing would make that problem highly unlikely. Still, a bellhousing mount can't hurt. If you were inclined to only use two mount locations, the front and bellhousing, and no ****** mount, would probably be the better arrangement. Ray
Especially if any tires and horsepower are involved. That's because torque to move a heavy load in lower gears will twist what it can. The car side motor mount/transmission tailshaft mount is just for noise isolation, not much for resisting torque. jack vines
Not sure bout the TKO but I ran front mounts on my 57 with turbo 350 using rear ****** crossmember. I ended up with cracked bell housing so now I run side mounts on all my 57s
There's going to be very limited "torque over" with a Hurst or Hurst style front mount. The are also many cast iron bell housings besides the 55-57 Chevrolet. The aluminum bell housing started with the 62 Chevrolets. And like already mentioned, trucks. I've seen several broken TH350 bell housings, and even TH400. My first Bracket car was a 56 Chevrolet (What else?) with a 375 HP 396, and an air cooled Powerglide from a 63 Nova. Front Hurst mount, rear transmission mount/cross member, and I never had any problem, and this was a Glide with the 4 cooling holes in the bell housing. Lucky? Who knows. In your case, as it sounds like this is a complete car you just want to put a 5 speed in' I'd use an aluminum bell housing with the mid mounts made for the roundy-round racers, and a rear cross member. I'm sure a 40 Ford Ch***is could benefit from a little extra support/bracing. JMO. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
If you do it, invest in a ****ter bell. Ansen made them, RC Industries, probably a few more. They did have the mount on the side that you are looking for.
