I'm sure this question has been asked and answered more times that I would like to admit. But I have a finned aluminum Stilko oil "cleaner" I'm using on a build, and need to know if there is a cartridge filter element that can be used instead of the traditional roll of butt wipe. I was given information from the guy I bought it from, about a specific filter element that is supposed to fit, but it doesn't seem to fit in the canister as well as I think it should. Anybody out there that can help? Thanks and Merry Christmas shake-n-bake

Why don't you just throw the Stilko in the garbage and use a spinon filter?

The whole point of using a Stilko, Frantz or similar filter is that they are about 10 times more effective than a spin on filter. And yes, toilet tissue is a superior filter medium for depth filtration. Especially if you can find the densest rolls, in other words the cheap industrial strength stuff they don't sell in grocery stores.

The best setup would be a spin on and a Stilko, with the Stilko connected to an oil cooler bypass under the spin on.

But, if you don't want to use the Stilko as designed there is no point in keeping it.

I don't think it would be possible to stick a Fram filter in a Stilko and have it do anything. They work on completely different principles. But why would you bother when you can buy a Fram in any cheap store?

Personally I would use the Stilko since they are so much better than a stock filter but have gotten tired of trying to explain it.

I believe I'm going to use the Stilco as I have a good outlet for the "industrial strength" butt wipe. I'm using this unit because I'm doing an old school, traditional hot rod. Not in primer, but shiney, like the early '60's cars. I agree that the Stilko's do a remarkable job, but thought there would be a manufacturer that would have an element I could just drop in. I did some research and found that the Stilco name was purchased by a company in Holland. They are still using the name, but I don't believe they are making these types of products. At any rate, I appreciate the response.

shake-n-bake just asked a simple question of what would be compatible with the Stilko, he didn't ask for a lecture on why not to use it.

this is what i did on a roadster i had awhile back, (since been sold) It's a different model but might give you an idea.

jee whiz... there is nothing wrong with taking a different path and doing what you want just because you like it. (even if it's more difficult) i guess some folks will never understand there's more than one way to build a hot rod!

At one time, Stilko was selling enough filters that they got a TP manufacture to produce "short" rolls so you didn't have to unwind a bunch of TP to make the roll fit.

The Stilko or depth filtration filter is the best on the market from the standpoint of complete filtration. Fram is the worst, they are notorious for poor quality with a substantial percentage of leakers that do not filter at all.

I can easily see throwing away a Fram and replacing it with a Stilko but can't see doing the reverse.

If you must use a conventional filter do your motor a favor and at least get a NAPA Gold or Hastings.

  11. Reminds me of the drop in filter on my little 356 Porsche. Not sure if that's good or not but it has a drop in filter like that.

Thanks for all the cool posts. And to BrandonB, I couldn't have said it better. I am a stage 4 cancer survivor, so I know of what you speak! The filter I mentioned that was recommended by the guy I bought this from, is a cartridge filter that fits a BWW application. Best part of it all, is the o ring that comes with the filter, fits the Stilko application. I'm gonna stay with the Stilko and the butt wipe for now. If someone has another cartridge filter application they know of for a Stilko, just let me know. Thanks again to all the responses. Much appfreciated.
