We have a fair weather rule that we are hoping will become law in 2015. But I haven't had any issues the last two years driving my car.

So, Bob; If I (and MANY others) decide to attend the NTBA rally up there in your state this year, and you see me up there with my Iowa plate, I'm gonna get the holsteins called on me by yours truly, right? (tongue-in-cheek)

That ought to put a damper on the local economy for the weekend.

Ya, I don't doubt it. I have had a restored plate on my 40 for over 30 years and never been stopped. But I carry a copy of the law with my registration just in case.....

I have decided to focus my wrath towards the sans-fender crowd from CT

I've put 21K on my fenderless hot rod so far and haven't had a problem yet. IA is a fender state, had to have them for my DOT inspection (specially constructed ***le) but they fell off shortly after. I got tailed several miles by an IL LEO last year but he left me alone. I've even gotton away with crossing into MN once.

I drove my roadster from Montana through Idaho and Washington . Then from Montana to Arizona with no problems. I was stopped by a **** cop in Kingman for blue dots in my 57 Chevrolet with Montana plates.
    There not legal in Arizona.

I heard that there is 1 if not 2 ammendment(s) to the Iowa fender law. I think it was the Iowa Street Rod ***ociation that got the fender law repealed. Other than my last '32 Ford, I had never built a fendered car.

The old process of ***ling is also defunct as Iowa is now a SEMA state.

Either way, I'm sure all LEO's have much more important things to be doing other than chasing after us damn hotrodders ;)

50+ years ago in NJ there was no law about fenders but we routinely failed the state inspection under a provision which lets the inspector fail a car for any reason which in the opinion of the inspector renders the car unsafe. One year I p***ed with cycle fenders. The next year I failed with no changes having been made. I had one inspector tell me cycle fenders were OK if they were as wide as the tire and covered from top of tire to a point on a line 15 degrees up from point of tire contact. I thought I was home free. I rebuilt to that spec but was rejected by another inspector who believed that all cycle fenders were unsafe. I even tried different inspection stations without changing anything. Always failed. Sometimes for the same thing. Sometimes for other things like the car being too low!!! Always under the inspector's opinion rule. I finally gave up, sold the car, and built a full-fendered Model-A.

The "fair weather fender law was put on the books in Washington state in the 70's when a 40 year old car was a 30 something model. Here is the link to the rcw. http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.37.500

You would pretty well have to be throwing up rooster tails of water and mud going down the road to get a ticket now though.

Oregon has a bunch of exemptions for special interest and antique cars from fenders to where your exhaust can exit. How ever you do not need a windshield on any car only the wiper must be in good working order.LOL I've driven my fenderless roadster for quite a few years in Oregon and Washington with no h***les, they do however want you off the road when there's a heavy rain and being as my car is ******* I'm happy to oblige.

In Maine if you register your car as a " Street Rod" the rules allow you to go fenderless. The police here are pretty laid back with regard to street rods, hot rods, etc. They won't bother you unless you do something stupid.
If I were you I would just go and not worry about it.

This is the best advice on all three pages, If you can get that signed, in print and laminated, in a size that fits inside a pocket or glovebox, then everything is Golden.

  18. In Arkansas fenders are required only if you register your car with a antique plate. A regular or street rod plate allows you to go fenderless.
A while back there was a new officer issuing tickets for blue dots and YOM plates, in the small town I lived in. Both are legal in Arkansas.

  19. Here in Oz theres no exemptions to run fenderless,it seems taboo to even mention it here.

  20. Rhode Island is so small that your car is never really totally in the state...............you are either driving in or driving out of RI.

I'm glad we have never had inspections here in Bama. As far as I know, as long as it's got liability insurance and a license plate, you can drive it here!

I drove my little hiboy roadster, the one in my avtar, on a cross country road trip from SoCal to Ohio and back, 8,500 miles and had no problem with the police in any of the many state I traveled through. My advice...Drive' em

  24. Don't know about fender laws here in Okie land but I've never been stopped for lack thereof. When we finally got the roadster on the road about four years ago I just kept the fingers crossed...

I'm from Michigan and have a 37 Ford bobber truck with no fenders and have never had a problem and I haven't talked to anyone who has . Just like anything else if you act responsibly you won't have a problem.

To add to the truth of this; I had my T inspected a month ago, and started building a little over a year ago. I had also understood that fenders and bumpers were a requirement, but while going through the list of "required equipment", I noticed that the sections for fenders and bumpers had been rescinded in 2010, but no mention was made of a new code section. After calling DOT, I got informed that it was correct, and there was NO NEW CODE made regarding either fenders or bumpers. In effect, they are no longer required for a new build, or an old one, for that matter.

You're golden down here, if you want to head south.

I'd have to say that if you can stand back and look at a fenderless rod and it looks right and looks like it is supposed to be that way with everything in the right place and everything looking right for what it is you won't have much problem in most states but if it is some sort of abortion of a vehicle like too late a model of pickup cab minus fenders or things are way out of proportion you might have some splainen to do to the man with the badge and the blue lights on top of his rig.
In this state a guy could probably rig up a pair of mud flaps on brackets so he could attach them to the rod in a minute or so and not throw rain water rooster tails up behind the car as he went on his happy way and not have a worry about being pulled over.
