The roadster build off – Pinkynoegg

I sure hope you fellas (and ladies) are ready for a wild ride! To put it simply, the next few months are going to be hell. The weird thing is I am ready to live this purgatory that I have made for myself.

Okay, enough with the intro. This is the roadster build off, as told by pinkynoegg. I guess I should start by saying that I am not alone in this venture. @krkx93 here on the HAMB is building a car as well. His thread can be found here:
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...y-you-some-beer-the-roadster-buildoff.958074/

Before everyone starts assuming this will be like a drama filled tv show, no. Krkx93 happens to be my cousin and the wager is a case of beer. That’s right; we will be building cars for a case of our favorite brewskies. Screw it.

The plan is to build two “roadsters”. They must be drivable, traditionally styled, and built by the owner. The winner will be chosen by a vote of the masses. That means you. Oh there is one little caveat, the cars have to be driven from North East Texas to the Lonestar Roundup on April 17th and 18th, 2015! ***(post 118 for the winner, this thread will continue to show build updates)

    Let’s go!

P.S. If you are following me on Instagram (@pinkynoegg) then some of this might be old news to you. it's not deja vu I promise.

    ***UPDATE***
I apologize for the pictures in this build thread that seem to be broken now. Not sure what happened...
This is what the car currently looks like (more pictures on post #146):

I started gathering parts about a year and a half ago. Many of y’all have helped me on this venture by selling your parts and giving great advice via the hamb and just shooting the bull with me. After what seemed like an eternity of staring at the computer screen and talking to everyone I know about getting a true roadster body, I found this beaut’ in Denton, Texas.

The story I got was that it was channeled over a deuce frame and had a hot little flatty it used to run the strip back in the day. By the time I got my hands on it, the frame was gone and the flathead was nowhere to be found.

I planned on throwing it on a 32 frame and sticking a hemi in it anyways. The hemi, I found before all of this even began. I was just scrolling through the local classifieds and found an old school water pump in Tyler, Texas. It was being used to irrigate the world famous Tyler Roses. There will be more on this motor later in the thread.

The frame rails came from a fellow rodder in Louisiana named Kenny. I’m sure a bunch of y’all know him on here. Great guy with an awesome 32! The frame, as I am told, was jigged up by big bad Bob Bleed back in the day.

It still needed an X-member, so I drove down to Beaumont for a 40 ford truck frame. Everything on it was toast except what I needed.

That’s it for now. Expect many more photos and a whole lot of questions. I still have about 3 months’ worth of work to post up here so stay tuned in the next few days.

Went to you Instagram page to watch for any further updates.

I like what I see there too!
I like the no doors channeled 28/29 body. Was it a heavy channel and lowered rod, if it ran no doors and the guy could step over the sides, and fit inside it?
Like the Anderegg roadster/coupster, that I also like a lot.
I like the grafted in windshield post and the cut down windshield with no upper bar. Are they gonna stay?

I like what I see so fare, and look forward to see what the other guy brings!

Now for a little update on the motor. I’ve been collecting 97’s for a while now so I knew I was going to throw a six pack on top of the hemi. I rebuilt them thanks to max here on the hamb. He knows his way around one of these.

I also knew that if you’re going to put a hemi in a small roadster, it needs the thump. For that, I grabbed a cam from Hot Hemi Heads thinking it would be some off brand they partnered with. Turns out, they shipped me an isky for much cheaper than I could find anywhere else!

I think she will have a little beat to her…

I had a little help pulling the motor from its little trailer. My competition is in the bass pro hat and that's a buddy of ours holding the pump. Boy that was an ordeal…

I broke down the motor since it needed a new cam anyways. You have to take the head bolts out in order to get the push rods out on these Chrysler hemis so I pulled the heads and replaced the head gaskets. Lucky me, this industrial motor was run on propane. It has to be the cleanest old motor I’ve ever broken into. It even still had some cross hatch on the cylinder walls!

Unfortunately, I think some sort of lake water was run through it. Time for a clean out.

And I figured this motor might be too good to be true. Just take a look at what was hiding under some crud….

Now I’m not one to just give up on a motor because of some little crack. After a lot of research I decided I could fix it myself. The fix I found was called Lock-n-stitch. They are little pins that go in the crack and actually pull it together. Here are some pictures of the fix:

good enough for government work I think.

Nice project, good to see all the old stuff used. We used to overlap the pins when we fixed cracks that way, the line of CCCCCCCCCC's locked all but the last pin from turning. Bob

And now for a little paint. A gold motor has always been on my list, so here it goes.

I really dig the industrial valve covers and @krkx93 saw that I had a gold sharpie laying in the shop. I guess you get crazy ideas during late nights...

I also wanted a five speed. So a tko was in order. Probably the only thing on the car not made before 1961. I changed it over to a mid-shift to be a little closer to where a traditional trans would come out of the floor. I also like painting all of my transmissions green. It’s just my thing I guess.

and of course i had to get a peek at what it would look like in the frame. she is going to be a little tight...
