Thank you all! Great inspiration! And by the way, I have painted two of my cars in that exact colour blue! Coincidence? I think not

  4. Not much going on so I thought I'd play around with Kustomkar's Volvo to see what it might look as a radical custom with a bit of a European flair....Here's what I ended up with and my apologizes for Kustomkar for twisting up his great car.:)

This is how I would want my Volvo 122 to look.
(The car already looks like this, I just changed the steel wheels to wires.)

I'm ultra conservative on paint schemes and vintage race car schemes. Any help would be appreciated. Gary car-2.jpg

Gary, there's so many ways to go with this and most of it is going to be a subjective call. What you've done is created
a huge canvas to paint on. Your color choices really are dictated by a direction and or concept of what you want
    the car to be.
For me, a race car is meant to call attention or just the reverse, an exercise in subtlety and design. I'm assuming that
you want to add to what you've done rather than a total repaint. So, that in mind, I'm suggesting that you create a contrast with the colors you've picked and still trying to promote a racing image. AS an example, I just increased the usage of black which will automatically create contrast with the red. (You could use white or some other color) then
accented with a brighter trim for demarcation. After that I'd start filling in the voids. Make your race numbers bigger, distress them, include old decals and add leather belts and if possible build a loud, large exhaust (Nothing says race car like noise) AND give it a name. race car black red.jpg By choosing a theme you start to build in a specified direction.
The other way is to be conservative. Go with a darker, classier color, whether you distress the letters or build it more like a restored race car, you will achieve the results by having a direction and being bolder with your approach.

Here's an example of a home built race car that's running around in Europe.

madfish, thanks for your time and effort. I understand exactly what you are saying. I like both versions. The paint on the 30 is just primer so anything goes. Now I just have to do it. Thanks again, Gary

  22. I like a more subtle approach on a vintage race car...something that looks racy and classic at the same time. That's a nice looking Chevy no matter how you end up painting it!
