Scta badge and scta shift knob

I just picked these two things up from a old hot rodder . How old are they ? It looks like they added the badge to the knob. I tried to look for pics of the same badge but I can't find any .

I've seen a lot of old SCTA stuff, but never a badge like that one. Nice find.

 

Very cool finds but, please take that one out of the skull and give it the respect it deserves.

 

I agree with lothiandonl940, find an original shift knob and have the centre machined and glue the badge / coin into it instead.

That's a nice piece, the story I herd from more than one old salt is that these were not made by the SCTA, but rather by a member of one of the SCTA clubs and his wife in the fifties. In the eighties they sold everything including the patterns to someone in Southern CA (the persons name escapes me). There are usually a few at LARS every year. Her is the on I bought one several years ago and also saw a few last year.

 

Its my understanding that the original pieces were trophy tags and predate WW2. There are probably some reproductions around as well. The one I have has fluting around the edges and remarkable detail for a quarter sized tag. It appear as if they are actually a fine caliber stamping rather than a casting. Like Big Dans mine has also been converted to a pin. Im considering having Lucky Burton or Kirk make a shift knob for mine.

I heard they from trophys too. The first time I saw one was on Pat Swanson's Spaulding brothers T recreation. He always has the cool old scta stuff, I remember trying to buy the shift knob off of him but I think it was already spoken for. JohnnyA

That knob looks like it may have stared as one of those thermometer shift knobs

 

That or it got thrown into a lathe. I see guys buy humdrum Bakelite shift knobs, cut a spot and sink a good luck coin/token into the top and triple their investment. JohnnyA

 

I think you are exactly right. I'm thinking they were used on early lakes trophys.

 

Maybe the skull has some sort of story but please remove the cool badge and file the skull in #13.

All I know is I would like to get one. Who is Pat Swanson ? and does he sell these now or was it a one time deal ?

Remove that one from the skull, yes; but put it on a long neck chain like the Special Victims Unit wears their badges. "Especially heinous!"
