Projects My 36 ford project. Or how to ruin a perfectly good car

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by the man, Mar 30, 2014.

  1. It definitely opens doors. I can draw stuff out first and check all the math. It also has very little clean up. I can also make an infinite number of them. So if someone decides they want one its a matter of minutes and boom. The machine wasn't cheap by any means but in the long run I think a good investment. If anyone wants any of the parts I'm making pm me

I was wondering about that as I posted....That is an offer I'm sure will be taken.
Good luck to you. Always looking forward to your posts.

I am trying to visualize the "frenched leaf spring" idea, pic's would help when you get to it!

  4. All secrets will be reviled in time. I got all my mounts cut. But I need to wait till my x member is in so I can pull it out of the jig to mount them.
If you look at the frame you will see a notch. That will house the spring eye. I moved it up 3 in. I did something similar for the rear mount. The spring kit I have is good just sorta monster truckish.

  5. I like to modifications ot the frame for the rear spring mounts. Was thinking of doing something like that to my 47. Has CE rear springs and mounts currently.
Do you have dimensions for them?

This is what I'm talking about with the rear springs. as you can see the stock ones hung down quite low. Even with lowering blocks this thing set like a monster truck. the front perch was the lowest thing on the frame by like 3 inches. it was definitely going to Drag on every speed bump. So I basically just cut pockets moved everything up. It moved all the rear suspension up 3 inches. with moving the springs and some rear axle mounts I'm working on high shouldn't need blocks at all ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1420314952.215888.jpg
I think I'm done for now. it finally stopped raining so it's time to take the Christmas lights down.

  9. Glad to run into this thread, beats Instagrams pictures for sure.. Whats the BMW latch from?

  10. I got them from a friend of mine. He works in a body shop so he comes across them. I guess there pretty generic for bmws. They are perfect for hot rods. Plus there stainless so you can polish them

  11. Thanks bud! Cars looking great!

I got my hood and rear end housing out of the mol***es after two months. Not bad results considering all those parts were painted. It's amazing how fast they get surface rust when they come out

    Looking good,

I've found when using Mol***es that neutralising the mol***es (mild acid) when it comes out helps with the rust issue. Bi-carb & steel wool is a gentle option, for what its worth...

I don't believe it was a perfectly good car to start with, and looking at the amazing result, you don't ruined it either ! some serious skills here !

  17. Really nice work - have enjoyed the whole thread! I don't have my own CNC plasma cutter, but I've designed a ton of my frame brackets, mounts, etc. in CAD and then have them laser cut . . . wonderful isn't it! I'll have to ping you when I have a bit more time to learn about your setup - could sure use one myself. Once you've done things like this, you can't imagine buying off the shelf ugly brackets and frame hardware that only 1/2 fits and is typically poorly styled. Like you, I love french curves, holes and some style along with my fitment and function.

    Great stuff by you!

  18. It was actually a 98% rust and dent free car. I felt a little bad cutting it up.

  19. The cutter was I think a good investment. There's definitely been a learning curve with it. One would be metal selection. Cold roll is your friend. Two is error is expensive. Nothing like wasting a $100 piece of metal. Three the computer cuts exactly what you draw not what your brain thinks it wants. Four math is your friend. I actually walk around my house looking for things to make. It's kind of addictive

I've been following your progress and I can't tell you how impressed I am at how fast this baby is coming together and yet your work is exceptional. Keep her going man, this is "eye candy" to watch.

I know the feeling and it's nice to sometimes work with clean metal.
To see the face of people when they say : I hope it was a junk car.
And you answer : No it was actually a very clean original car.
    Priceless!
