Yes it was never blown, but held the A/G record both for NHRA and for the Standard 1320...It was under restoration, but I lost track of the progress.

  5. I don't know who this is. Never saw this car before. He really has it hooked up!

Maybe Mickey Thompson put a blower on top of a Chrysler earlier than did Don, but I think Don was the first to run a top-mounted blower with a Gilmer belt...apparently he was inspired by Don Yates who ran one on a 4-banger.

Red Case was from Torrence...later would lose his life at Vacaville

Another bad copy, but it's Willy Borsch....November '56...by the time I first saw this bright red roadster (on gas) it was at Santa Ana in the summer of '57 where it turned 129...pretty stout for that era.

There have been a number of pictures on this thread of this front mounted blower Chrysler running at Illinois, this is the first time I have seen an identification for it...145 first time is pretty good! this is mid-57.

Rex Marshall's car, same car is yellow on the cover of the Speedway catalog just over a year ago. About the same time as that catalog came out, he was in process of painting the car back to this scheme.

  11. The Grist Brothers Willys was in a magazine a couple of years ago. It lives, but, sadly, it's a street rod now. The article did clear up something for me. There was always something different about the Willys profile that seemed different, even from other chopped 41's. In the article Floyd Grist explained that 4 door sedan doors were used when the top was chopped. That not only gave the car a better side profile, but shortened the whole car about 5", bringing the rear end further forward. Like Hugh Tuckers shortened 29 Chevy roadster body, NHRA never caught it.

So is the pic of the FED you? I've never heard of Shaws Field? Is that the current dragstrip back in the day?

Arnold Birkey at Cotati, late '50s...If the name Arnold Birkey sounds familiar, it might be because of this nuclear explosion at the Winternationals much later in Arnold's career (pic from Don Ewald's site)

That's my uncle. Not the current strip here now, but, was on old 41 by Sky King air port. I believe the ticket booth is all that is left of it now. Shaw's opened in 57 and I think closed in the 70s. Hoped some others might have some pix.

These pictures are from the Mckinstry photo collection and most of them were taken at Indianapolis. They were posted here on the Hamb and are the best collection of 60s photos that I have ever seen. Thanks to everyone that was involved in taking them and posting them for our viewing pleasure. If you are interested look for the thread. downloadfile-12.jpeg downloadfile-23.jpeg downloadfile-24.jpeg
