I first saw this car built by Mitch Michell at the Bellville Gear Jambers drags at Parks Field in Ill. It looked like a scarry drive. His brother had a fast 41 Studebaker coupe with an Olds engine

Right you are, Rootie. And that's Chief Mechanic Frankie Del Roy talking to the driver. Bignotti was still a crew member at this point but it's pretty likely that he was already figuring out ways to make the car better.

I believe this is a Mickey Thompson creation.

Looks like Chalk Hill just west of Winnetka. If I'm right, Taft High school would be built to the left of this spot a few years later.

  14. It looks like most of the bolts of those blower units would be hard to get at, making it end-wrench flipping time. But the worst drawback is the added wind resistance.

I've seen other auto engines where the intake / exhaust systems were reversed from the norm and I believe it was done mostly for "packaging" things (center of gravity, clearances, aero, etc.), like getting the exhaust up, to the rear and then straight back on the rear centerline of the car - like those used on the Indy Lotus-Fords and some vintage Formula 1 cars. Or dune buggies? Or? Gary

  18. Bet most of you don't recognize this car. They were hot rally cars in Europe and the USA in the 50's. 1958 Sunbeam Rapier Series 2 Chassis # A3804978 LCX.jpg

It does look like something that Mickey Thompson might have come up with, but is also similar to what Bruce Crower tried at Indy and in the champ cars.
