My aunt and cousins with their '58 Biscayne. Not sure who owned the car in the first picture.

So these are photos of Zora Arkus-Duntov and the Talbot. Thanks for posting, Rootie. It seems strange but he actually attempted to race the car on dirt a couple of times. I've seen old film of Zora running the car at Langhorne of all places.

Here's the Novi crew pushing the car back to the pits after Cliff Bergere hit the wall backwards at the head of the main straightaway in 1948. This ended up getting him either fired or making him quit depending on what story you read. At any rate Ralph Hepburn took his place in the car only to crash fatally.
And notice that there are no fuel leaks in spite of the tail being damaged so badly. The front drive Novis used an early type of semi-flexible fuel bladder in their tail. I don't if there's any truth to the story but I've had more than one old mechanic say that the flexible bladder was a factor in the injuries to both Hepburn and (later) Miller when the fuel surged forward on impact and deflected the bladder forward and up against the back of the driver's seat.

Yeah, he didn't have a lot of luck with the Talbot, don't think it ever qualified for any race he entered.
Near as I can tell it was first entered in the 500 in 1941 by a French team. At some point Duntov bought it and continued with it after the war. As an aside: given that the classic definition of a Indy roadster as having a offset driver/driveline it would appear the Talbot would have been be the first roadster over a decade before Travers/Coon/Kurtis/Keck "invented" the Indy roadster. tal-1.JPG tal-2.JPG tal-3.jpg tal-4.JPG

Interesting observation. Nothing even remotely similar to this before the official dawn of the roadsters, then? I'm sure it got some close scrutiny by all the chassis guys, eh? Gary

Real blunt force trauma on that Novi. No wonder he didn't survive.

Good old Dempsey Wilson. Never had great rides. The Casale/Greenman probably his best. I hear he was quite a Cam guy.

There never was a official designation of a "roadster". The AAA/USAC (not counting the junk formula years) didn't care how the engine/driveline/driver was configured as long as it met the w/b-engine size-track width etc. rules. The general consensus is a roadster has a offset engine/driveline with the driver offset of the driveshaft. Back in 1926 the Eldridge Spl. from the U.K. ran the 500 and it certainly was "roadster-ish"in appearance but looks to have had a centered driveline so the "purists" probably wouldn't consider it as such.

Those pics kinda of confirm what indyrjc said about the fuel tank contributing to his injuries. It appears the upholstery was pulled loose by the tank flexing forward.
