Ah, the Dogwood City, my old hometown!
Had many adventures there, several on Kellogg Lake, the lake under the railroad trestle.

This is an interesting photo of cars being pushed into position for the start of the 1949 500 Mile Race. George Connor was the driver of the #22 Baby Blue Crown and George Lynch of the #26 Auto Shippers car. Connor drove a great race to finish 3rd while Lynch crashed on his second lap. Something that really stands out in this photo is the semicircle that has been painted on the bricks just down from the starting line. This is where the photo of the drivers and participants was taken every year just before the start. When you look at those photos today it looks like everyone was standing in a straight line but they weren't. They were actually standing on the circular line that you see in the photo with a panoramic camera set at the center of the circle. The lens was opened at one side of the group and it and the camera moved across everyone to the other side exposing new film as it went. The result was a big long and skinny negative that printed what looked like everyone standing in a straight line. And there was always a joker or two that would purposely stand at one end of the group and then run behind everyone so that they could also appear at the opposite end in the photo as well. AAA official Chet Ricker did this for many years going back to sometime in the 1920s I believe. He was still doing it after WWII.

Roger McCluskey flipping at Reading in early 1964. He broke both arms pretty badly and missed much of that season's racing; including Indianapolis. Notice that the Chevy engine still has a pretty standard looking "wet sump" oil pan. I'm not sure when but somewhere around 1965 USAC made dry sump engines mandatory for sprint cars. I guess the idea was that an engine with an external oil tank would put less oil on the track in the event of major blowup.

Lynch took a good lick into the wall and put a pretty good kink in the Auto Shippers car.

  19. RedlandMaggie - thanks so much for your pics of the great PNW. I grew up in the Bvtn./Aloha area,
hiked many miles in the Gorge and Ore. coast; lots of good memories before the hordes arrived!

  20. RedlandMaggie, ditto! Grew up in Milwaukie, 1953 to 1986! I can't believe how much parts of Puddletown have changed while others look just about the same as 1965! Don't get back there very often, loved the pics of the old Farmers Market.I used to take the bus with my Mother to downtown, I remember the markets on 3rd and Salmon? Ancient history! Anyway, thanks.

  21. It certainly could be, I took the date off the site.

  22. Sure, you wouldn't even recognize the approaches to Milwaukie on 99E as you cross the Clackamas River bridge, it's changed so much just in the last 7 years.
