My '64 Buick Electra 225 Sport Coupe is getting a shave. I have been debating the portholes for months. Portholes or no portholes?
Yeah guys, that is one side of the argument. But I also like the clean lines sans the portholes. I have already placed a bullet in the grill emblem hole and removed all Buick & Electra and 225 badges so the portholes are all that is left to give away it's make to the masses. Even with them there I get the "Love your Cadillac!" comments almost as often as I get the "What is it?" comments. It is still on the BIG Buick X frame, with a Nailhead and clean Buick lines, so it's a Buick, regardless. Thanks for the input. Still thinkin' thinkin'.
It has been said that anyone can restore a old car , But it takes a real man to cut one up! Either way it a great car!! Larry
Portholes should stay. The car looks pretty darn clean with them left in place unlike script and such.
You'll get so many more "nice Caddy!" comments without them. Move them, swap for other years if you want, but i vote No to removing them completely. -rick.
If it were me, I would shave the door handles and the rear quarter panel emblems, plus anything on the trunk lid, and I'd relocate the radio antenna to the rear quarter panels, maybe one on each side, heavily angled either way. But I'd keep the port holes and the emblem in the grille. The portholes and grille emblem don't distract from the car but they do give it identity, unlike the door handles and front fender antenna, which just distract from the lines of the car, in my opinion. Stuff like that only gets put on the car for practicality, not for design.
Reposition the portholes higher on the fender and use 6 or 8 per side instead of 4, that will make people wonder.
Though I appreciate and see the merits of the older style portals, the re-positioning options, and adding portals, that is really not me. I want smooth, clean lines. I will not be adding any distractions to the body lines. I have seen too many cars that end up looking kinda clowny, meaning that a detail like this distracts from the car instead of adding to it. My thought is, "Do the portholes add to the aesthetics of the car or not?"
