The car obviously wasn't built with a motorboat stance, it's just bagged, so in my book , it's not a tail dragger because it wasn't built that way...it's adjustable.

That's also often a lame excuse for not doing things properly...and I don't just mean about trail draggers.

 

when judging ones opinion of what is right or wrong is neither here nor there .... one may consider the method chosen in certain situations to the said person ... unless there is a text book way of doing things then opinions are just that ...

Just drove out to New Mexico and picked up this 1935 Packard. It already has the stance, it just needs a little bit of everything to become a driver.

I'm gonna stir the pot re airbags. hehe. GM Started playing with airbags in the 40s. I had a 59 Biarritz on factory air. It self leveled but when going over a steep driveway you could pull out the lift lever and raise up to full travel. best invention ever for the prevention of tearing up your freshly chromed bumpers.
I'm seriously considering them on my 39 . Oh the humanity.

 

Yes, the GM airbag story comes up every time bags and traditional building is discussed. They just didn't happen to be used on customs in 1949.

A tail dragging stance is just that, the car's suspension is setup so the car sits like a moving motorboat, i.e. tail down.

Anything adjustable isn't a stance, it is adjustable suspension or ride height...and that is a completely different thing.

 

Sure people were playing with bags and hydraulics way back when. But they weren't doing it to lay the frame in the dirt and make the car look like the suspension fell out, which is what 99.9% of modern air bagged cars do. Anyway we're not here to argue about air bags we're here to look at pictures of some cool tail dragging customs.

 

totally agreed fuzzybear , I wasn't per say arguing the fact just stating that rollin down the road you cant tell the difference ? I myself just happened to buy a car with bags but if the car wouldn't have had them I would have still bought it , would have preferred it to be springs and shocks , I like the tail-dragger stance and give kudos to those who actually take the time and effort to do so

One of my favorite cars, ok I know maybe a little low in the front to be a tail dragger, but I love the way this looks!

Some of these are REALLY low in the rear. Would they have a small wheel arrangement underneath to keep from scraping?

I do remember some cars having casters mounted under the rear bumper for that reason.

 

How many guys leave their front suspension stock height to accentuate the rake? Is that common?

I'm planning on making my 41 more into a taildragger. Future plans are teardrop skirts, chop, custom hubcaps, Appleton spotlights, and drop the rear just a little more maybe. Oh,..and no airbags .

 

It was very common in the 50`s to leave the front at stock height. I think a true taildragger needs to have front noticeably higher than the rear. Today, the term is used very loosely.

 

Maybe these guys can explain what a taildragger is .....

Outback....I've done nothing to lower the front suspension. Tonyvan has aced the look. However, unlike Tonyvan, I did pie-cut the hood so that it was not so 'nose high'. The Lincoln is a bigger car and the stock hood simply looked out of proportion.....
