  1. Yep that the one I remember. The wizard was a 55 chevy from Jonesboro.

  2. The Wizard was my first real race car , I ran a 409 for a short time then sold it to the present owner who run a injected. 265 The Wizard has been in storage since the mid 70s it is just like it was when it ran the last time Injected 265 -Chrysler 4 speed-Olds rear with Henrys axles-Kellison glass front cap- lead filled rear bumper and a 100 lb battery- Still has the name of my shop on the quarters. last time I saw it the red rubber balls used to seal the injectors were deterated and fell down the injector tubes. The old lacquer paint is in bad shape. The owner is not intrested in selling it ,says someday he is going to run it again. I will try to post pictures of it back then and now

Quite right Gary, been one of my faves every since you started it, BTW I first met Marty about 35 years ago .

  4. When I seen it the small block mill was the engine. I almost forgot about the red rubber balls .

  5. Drag racing really lost something when they stopped smoking the tires and went to slipper clutches! Watching the post "Cool Old Drag Racing Movie" really brought it back to me.
Even some racers today don't get they weren't burnouts, nobody did burnouts, it was the run! There is nothing, nothing like two 60's front motored AA/Fuel Dragsters smoking it from start to finish. It's something lacking from today's "nostalgia" front motor cars.
I know that era is long gone forever, but MAN! IT WAS THE GREATEST!

Not me....I always wore blue jeans and that guy is too tall to be me during those years. When I used to sit up there I was between 12-15 and I wasn't 6' till I was 16. By then Irwindale had opened up (in '65) and it was only a few miles east of home, so my visiting Lions was only occasionally during the late 60's.

Don't go to the CHRR anymore.
Same old same old. Don't get me wrong, great people, good racing .But, somehow it just is the same every year. Costs me about a thousand bucks to go!
Haven't gone to the "Big Show" for I don't know how long.
Good Lord, too crowded, too much money, ridiculously fast. Not very entertaining...to me.
I'll go back when somebody crams a modern type safe chassis under a front engine full body OLD STYLE car and smokes the track. It could be done. Run a 8 or a 7, who
    cares?
Same with the funny cars. Go slower, run 9's! I'd like to see a 67 Comet, a 68 Cuda or Mustang, an AMC! THAT would be like the old days. Have THREE burnouts per race. HELL, bring back the circus music!
There has to be a way to get more cars on the track and less static displays.
Beats the nostalgia 5.50's any day!

Another from George Klass...Mackey & Veselka A/C Bantam, from Texas

    3200829.jpg
Buck & Bohls Olds' powered B/R, also from Texas...this one got a lot of ink, including an HRM spread, was really well constructed.

    3835834_orig.jpg
This looks a lot like John Sauer's C/FC from Colton, and the Scotty's Muffler Service would sort of back that up as Scotty was also from the area (San Bernardino)...but the top does not seem to be chopped as much as was Johns, and the background seems more like the Midwest rather than SoCal...anyone else?

    4703861.jpg

Only clue here is "Austin, Texas," this roadster is vaguely familiar, but too "vaguely" for me to remember details. Texas guys?

    7142935.jpg

Same with this one, it might be a Texas car, but no name...still, if you want a definition of "hiboy roadster" this is it

    9847556.jpg
Jack Schempf from Arizona (Tempe, maybe), dual McCulloch blowers into a carbureted Lincoln...this thing flat ran fast, I remember it running at Henderson NV in '59...also ran national events.

    9327823.jpg
No ID on this Ford (?) powered dragster...but that Fiat in the background looks a lot like the Hi-Winders coupe from Massachusetts (?)...so maybe this is at least East Coast? I'm guessing that this is late '50s from the construction, pretty basic but it's a dragster that these guys most likely built in a backyard garage...

    sanford5.jpg
Stanford ME...these guys had a short drag racing season but they made the most of it

    sanford17.jpg
More Sanford...you could spend less than $1000 in those-year dollars and build a car like this...your first stop was the junk yard, where you got most of your parts...

    vintage_drag_racing_009_12232013.jpg
A/GS vs AG...Joe Pisano, near lane, blown SBC, racing the Grist Brothers unblown big Ford. The latter car held the A/G 1320 Standard record for a time..Imagine an A coupe being competitive in A/GS, but this one was, finished, if I remember correctly, in a dark candy orange....This could be Pomona, but I don't remember so many trees in the background...Dean?

    vintage_drag_racing_014_12232013.jpg

    Letters say it all, Fremont..

    vintage-hot-rod-drag-.jpg
Scoville & Koper, from Sherman Oaks, CA, near lane, don't know who they were racing. Scoville & Koper later upgraded to a blown Chrysler on gas, loaned Ivo their engine, in Ivo's Fuller car, set a gas record at around 159, late '50s.

    Vintage_Drag_Racing_34.jpg
This is really old history, Paradise Mesa, near San Diego..early '50s...note the X on the track; Paradise Mesa was an old WWII landing strip and the X meant that pilots were not supposed to land there (though sometimes happened)

    vintage_drag_racing_018_12232013.jpg
    No ID, anyone??

    vintage-hot-rod-drag-racing-poster.jpg
Again, no ID...gotta love the caption on the car and the name...looks like late '50s nationals

    vintage-riley-drag-special-race.jpg
The J.E. Riley construction car, probably Melvin Dodd's flathead, Calvin Rice, in helmet, drove (was a cousin or uncle or some relation to Buddy Rice, one-time Indy 500 winner). This car has been recreated and is (or was) at the NHRA museum, won the '55 NHRA nationals with this setup.....this photo is at Colton.

Thanks again to George Klass and the other sites who allow us to poach their photos!!!
