From George Klass: Tony Waters Desoto-powered A/MR at Bakersfield. This car runner-up'ed in '59, but backfired into the blower manifold in '60, sending the engine cover flying. All that beautiful ducting you see in this photo was totally destroyed.

As you view these photos from days gone by, remember that these cars were usually built in a garage, by the owners, and they raced for trophies and records...there was no television, no yelling announcers, no sponsors save maybe a local gas station...and it was about having fun.

    Glad you are back.
Anybody got any more pics of Bruce Kaiser's Willys? Joe Airoso tells me that was the first blown Willys (or maybe gasser) he remembers seeing on the West Coast. If so, let's give this guy some credit.

Anyone know whose twin blown Chrysler car this is? I checked on "Two to Go" and there are two photos of this car, but only information is "Grave Gambler."

This set is just a small set from a distant past in Central California...mostly from San Luis Obispo...I guess that the area around the drag strip is filled with houses now, only memories remain.

Glad to see you back 296ardun, those are some great pictures of the early days. I tried that oilcan link above to where you are getting some of the pictures but it seems like its a different website. I couldn't find any car pictures there. Here is a picture of Little Hoss to keep things rolling. downloadfile.png

Think that Twin is an early picture of the "Isky Laugh Clown" - not Lefty.

Only the name "Grave Gambler" for several years at TwoToGo, someone must know who they were.

It might be, though there are some differences...here is the picture again and some of the "Laff Clown" from the "Two to Go" site"...the car in the original shot has a straight axle and the Laff Clown has no wing...but the owners may have modified it....straight axles could lead to bad handling so they may have changed to a dropped axle...

  17. Here is a valuable pic Dated De 1962. Here are2 Pontiac powered rails. the red car is Earnie's Camera
"Shudderbug" conventional Pontiac driven by Bill Alexander and Tommy IVO. Behind it, it M/Ts Dragmaster digger with M/T HEMI Pontiac power. This car won the US Nationals a few months earlier. Pontiac was on top of the world at this time but, about 1 month later, GM management set a racing ban forbidding Pontiac any more racing activity, no more race cars, no more race engines or even any parts. For the remainder of the muscle era Ford and Mopar would go at it on the race tracks while GM concentrated on street performance. I collect M/T hemi Pontiacs and parts. pontiacheaven.org. thanks for the pic

Sure looks like "Jazzy's" Fiat. Body set back and the stock Fiat grille.

Also the picture with the light colored willys pickup sure looks like the Yellow pickup owned by Al Dalporto that was bought by Panellas and became the Panella Brothers candy red pickup. downloadfile-239.jpeg

All but that bottom picture from my site ( TwoToGo ) are of the restored car. Cowl different too but who knows for sure how many changes these cars went through. 99.9% sure it isn't Lefty.

For me drag racing today just does not have the same appeal as it did years ago.
I really like the groups that halved formed across the country for racing 60's style drag cars only.

Jimbo I'm with you on that. I take in 5-10 Nostalgia races a year. If it wasn't for the Nostalgai events I wouldn't go....JT
