    ,
This line up just kills me! All beautiful cars!
TWO beautiful. un-chopped Mercs, both with Dodge caps (or "wheel covers", for the new generation revisionist police.:D) Coincidence? And can that be a kouple of kustom Kaddy's I see?
The 40's style '36 is absolutely perfect!
The chopped Merc coupe is reminiscent of both Nick Matranga's and Johnny Zaro's (but not as chopped.)
But WAIT! Let's top it off with THE Zaro convertible! Just amazing!

BTW, the video on page #22 (couldn't find post number???) is also amazing!
Complete, uninterrupted walk through! So many wonderful cars!
But, where were all the spectators?

This trunk is what the term "Pancaked" used to refer to.
    (Ditto for hoods.)

Stay tune I will be posting a lot of kool kustom pics. I've had the privilege to scan a lot of pictures taken by Gary Glasgow. This set was taken in Wichita June 1959 at the military base. Gary told me they blocked off an air strip to host a drag race for the day. Would have been real kool to be there. This is the same area where we have the Starliner car show..... The Mercury is King George's, I've heard stories about how kool his sled was and it is kool to finally see it.

  19. Reminds me a little bit of the scallop decals that came in the first version of the AMT 49 Merc kit. Way cool!

No info, other than I snapped it at TRJ Show a couple years back.
As you can see, it appears to be an older build undergoing a fresh makeover.

For those who might not know, Gary Glasgow owned and operated Night Prowlers, They sold flipper hubcaps to lake pipes and everything in between. A hell of a nice guy, you need to meet him if you get the chance. Where did he grow up, I know his business was in Lamar Missouri.

  28. It's owned by Doug Beattie and came out of Don Lowe's shop....same combo that produced the Futurama '40. If you're not familiar with that car, it's worth looking up.

Don Lowe has been building classy looking traditional customs for years. I have been following his work since the 80`s when he lived in Colorado. Do a search, you will be surprised.

Stan is right, Don Lowe is one of the great builders that not too many people seem to know about.

I got to meet Don years ago when I was about 12 years old.

My Dad was the big custom influence on me as a kid. He would occasionally talk about just missing out on a '49 Merc that was for sale here in downtown Denver back in about '54. "It was leaded and lowered with spinner hubcaps, dual pipes and Appletons. I had the money to buy it but I had to work late the night I was going to buy it and some rich kid beat me to it." He talked about "that old Merc" until he passed away.

Since Dad was a custom guy, he taught me about shaved door handles, different skirt styles, chopped tops, different side chrome treatments and the list goes on and on. Occasionally we would look at magazines together and he'd quiz me on what was what on customs that were featured. I got to where it was pretty hard to stump me.

Growing up, during the summer, it was always a weekend ritual to go for a ride with the folks on Friday night, Saturday night or on Sunday afternoons. I usually liked the Friday night or Saturday night trips the best, but I remember one Sunday afternoon at Sloan's Lake when there was a huge car club gathering with what seemed like a thousand bombas, but that is another story..........

Anyway, we would often stop at a Dairy Queen or Baskin Robbins for ice cream, or even 7-11 for a Slurpee. One Friday we were out on the south end of Federal Boulevard by Sheridan High School. There was a new place that had recently opened, and they were having a cruise night to help get the restaurant off the ground. It was called "At the Hop". It was your typical 50's style diner with alot of stainless trim and neon lighting. It had car hop service just like the good old days and 50's rock'n'roll playing over the ordering speakers at the car stalls. I'll never forget it.

The place was absolutely packed, but we stopped to have a treat and check out the cars. Don Lowe was there with his incredible '49 shoebox. It was the only car I wanted to look at. It happened to be the only custom there. Me and Dad were looking it over and I was just gushing about the chopped top, dummies, lake pipes, Pontiac side trim, frenched headlights and '49 Plymouth bumpers. Don was standing nearby and he overheard our conversation. He came over and told me how impressed he was that such a young kid knew so much about customs. I told him that me and Dad talked about them all the time, and that someday I would have a chopped sled, too. He chuckled and said "Kid, I think you'll get there one day."

He was very gracious and opened the door and let me peek in, as well as the trunk. We never got a look at the engine, but most custom guys don't care too much about that, as long as it was reliable and was ready to cruise.

At the time, I had no idea who Don was or about how many great sleds he had built or been a part of. To me, he was just "the kool guy at the cruise night with the sweet Ford coupe." Not too long after, I saw his car featured in a magazine, Classic & Custom I believe, and it all fell into place for me. I knew then that Don was the real deal and he was one of the great custom builders around. I'm so thankful that Don took the time to show a kid his car, and help fuel the fire and passion for customs that I still have today..........Wherever you are Mr. Lowe, thank you! E
