Hold up. You don't know a thing about the other guy's car except it's a "shit box", perhaps overlooking a small bit of engineering that goes into one of those cars, but you expect him to know everything about yours? Ignorant pot calling the ignorant kettle black, I think.

  3. Working in a gas station I had a '59 Vette with an Offy 6X2 intake, no hood. An old guy looked it over for awhile then asked me how I could afford an Offenhauser engine.

"is that a pacer????" I know how you feel, my 70 AMX is still on my rotisserie but when I tell "civilians" that its an AMC they don't even know what AMC was. even other car guys know nothing about AMC's. I had the owner of the body shop where I was once employed tell me that all V-8 AMC's came from the factory with small block Chevy's, even after I corrected him he continued to swear it was true.????

I was driving along in my chopped 35 ford and I pulled into a yard sale. As I pull up another guy is getting out of his car and we strike up a conversation mostly about my car. Everything is normal until he say "I got something you'll really like over at my house buried in the garage" slightly interested I say " oh ya?" To which he replies "ya I got a 1985 Honda motorcycle".......... How are they even related? I'm not even into motorcycles.

I did get some cool stuff at the yard sale though.

My wife keeps calling my American Bantam an American Rambler. Not that I really care but she tells people this while I run into the store or whatever. I come out and it's "Hey nice Rambler". Oh well.

Ramblers are great! I had a '68 Javelin with a built '72 401 in it. In a little late night activity I stomped the crap out of a 440 in a '64 Valiant. When we were done he asked what kind of car it was. I said AMC, he didn't get it. I said Rambler, he said "I can't tell anyone I got stomped by a Rambler". I said, "neither can anyone else, why do you think you guys keep losing to me?". He then asked what engine was in it and I told him it was only a 290 with headers (pointing at the fender emblem). He didn't believe it so I opened the hood and he stared in there for 5 minutes. "Yep, looks like a 290" and walked off. 5 minutes before he didn't know what an AMC product even was and then he knows what a 290 looks like? They all look the same on the outside if you can't see the side of the block.

I had an Rambler American with a 360 in it. A couple of young guys were checking it out at a car show and were looking at the engine. The "expert" one told the other one it was a small block Chevy, I suppose because of the lay out of the header tubes. I guess he didn't notice the distributor in front or the extra bolts in the valve covers.

Some of ya'll's stories might be about me. I like nothing better than to pull my fellow rodder's leg. Last year we sat along side the parade route of the Frostburg, MD cruise and like the two old hecklers on the Muppets busted chops all night. We rolled laughing at some of the looks we got. If they happened by chance to see me leaving in the Olds they realized they'd been had and that I wasn't just one of the citizen spectators. The guys in the old cars were pretty gracious and had a sense of humor. The newer car drivers, not so much. Telling the new 'vette guys that I liked their Camaro got a lot frowns. Asking them if that was the new Mustang went over even worse, ha! Ha!

not really goofy but....I was filling my OT 85 fiero GT at the gas station fri. when a young kid pulled up behind me in a Mazda Miata , rolled his window down and said "man I never see Fiero's around anymore, I always liked the looks-how do you like yours ?" I said I've owned this one since 1988 and driven it 90.000 miles. he said " well I guess you really like it then!"

I took my M37 to a charity show several years ago. Some fat Jack ass walks up and says "where are your guns?" I happened to be on the passenger side where the rifle rack was so I pulled out the jungle carbine and popped the bolt open. He got super pale and I swear he shit himself.

Years ago at an impromptu car show at a museum in L.A. a guy walks up and says, "is that your car?" he then launches into a rant about what a piece of shit my car is, a small group has gathered around the car listening to his tirade, pointing out defects in the paint and this and that when he,s finished I ask " does this mean you're not gonna buy it?" the guy just explodes and the group that had gathered burst out laughing.

  16. OK here's a brandy new one right off the press. This morning and I shit you not.

I am in the garage with the door up working on an old Harley frame that I am restoring.

I look up and this guy is standing in the garage so I asked him what he wants.

he says, "Is that a part of your Ford?"

    So I say, "What Ford?"

he says, '"Your pickup," and points at the Willys.

    I said, "That's not a Ford"

he says, "yes it is they didn't make Chevrolets back then."

When I was a barely teenaged boy our older neighbor or one of his buds had a car with a sticker like this on aside window.
    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTY1WDEwMjQ=/$(KGrHqYOKj!E5W9!lpC!BO,UUp0oHQ~~60_35.JPG

I don't know if he had a Weiand manifold or not.
I would probably have pronounced completely different if not for that sticker.

Ceriani ( motorcycle forks), Porsche, shot peening, and Raymond Loewy often get pronounced "wrong," or at least different here in Massachusetts.

I had an old beat up 6 cylinder "62 Doge PU with an Offenhauser valve cover on it and a bunch of young guys wanted to know how fast that truck would go with that Indy car engine in it.

Local Cruise last night, took my 48 Merc. First it was "Who made Mercury's". Then it was "Whats the Mercury Eight stand for"? Left early.

  25. A friend of mine (kustomcar53 on the H.A.M.B.) build a very nice 53 Ford mild kustom
    He drove it to work.
As he left one of the guys he worked with asked "Is that your car?"
    "Sure is" said Steve
"Nice. Not as cool as a Camaro." The guy told Steve

  29. You know when you "have to go" to one of those parties when you don't want to be there?
I usually find a quiet corner and slowly get tanked. Then someone says "I'll introduce you to Fred- he's got some old cars - you guys could talk for hours".
When "Fred" comes over and then says, "yeah, I have some vintage cars" "Oh yeah, what have you got?" He says " a 1990 Civic, and a 1988 Subaru"
me-"Oh". Fred- "What have you got?" me- "Just some old junk."
I have nothing to add here, so I just keep drinking.
