COE a couple ford coe build questions

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by atotalnincompoop, Apr 1, 2015.

  1. Im sure there will be more as i move along with this build.
but here are a couple thing that have been bugging me so far this morning...
what are my headlight options for a 38 ford? One of the first things i thought was cool about these trucks were the factory headlights, i really thought they were neat at first. But as the truck is taking shape i'm thinking i may want something more streamlined. i like the molded in look.
im open to options, and am not opposed to salvaging out some modern headlights from the wrecker if i knew which ones to look for.
    Any ideas?
The second thing today is, is there anyone out there who is parting early ford coe's out? I need a few odds and ends. The one item that i need soon is the trim piece that goes on the right side of the windshield on the interior. Its a tapered, formed sheetmetal piece, the stud that holds the windshield adjuster comes through this piece. ill try to find a pic of what i need.

  2. I saw one done with 38-39 car headlights in the fenders, looked different, but not bad. My advise is to stay away from modern stuff, it always looks like a blister on your ****.

Consider putting the Stock Headlites to the side of the grille, just behind where the hood fits.

There is a '39 cab-over panel running around Mesa Az. has them mounted there, and it really looks good.IMO

  4. I walked around the wrecker today, nothing modern looked right.
got a pair of 46 chevy truck lights off a neighbour today, kinda like the idea of that style, just not those particular units as they stick out too far forwards.

  5. Id like too see that, ill google it
    thanks

  6. If you haven't already, this is a good way to spend 7 minutes.

  7. Cool video

  9. Ya that looks better, i held mine up in that position and it looks like they will fit perfectly. Even the curve of the fender where they used to mount appears to be the same curve as the cowl.
    so that settles that!
    thanks man☺

RATZ,,, I like a 35-36 P***. front bumper on them. that "dip" excites me !!!

  16. I think that bumper woukd like nice aswell, but i'm kinda going in a different direction. Trying to something unique.

  17. I've seen pictures of that van many times and never noticed the headlights before, must mean that they work for me.

  18. The lights are a subtle change, but once you notice it, it is totally different.
works for me too, i'm doing it!☺

38 big truck headlight stands are smooth (no marker light) and bolt right on. I always thought dropping the headlight bucket down an inch or so, over this stand would look cool.

As for the interior trim....I might buy a COE to part out. If I do, I'll let you and everyone here know.

  22. I had a 40 ford coe as well. I built a faux tow truck for a guy a couple years ago, i regret wasting that cab on him, he will never finish it. Anyways...it had the lights with the marker light in the stand, i was going to keep those but i never got a chance to swap them with the 38 set. Oh well
when are you thinking about getting the other truck?

  23. Anyone have any experience with fibergl*** and gel coat?
I have a set of gl*** rear fenders that i have sliced in half and made wider to fit over my dually rear wheels. Should the extended portion of the fender be re-gel coated before the finish body filling is done or should i do the body filler first on the figergl*** tben gel coat?
    I have little fibergl*** experience☺

  24. Gel coat is only used in a mold. It serves no purpose other than making the part surface smooth. Now that you have altered the part, just finish by sanding down the high spots, using filler for the low spots, then a primer-surfacer to get the part perfect for paint.

Actually jel coat is often used on repairs. Boat restorations in particular will often be re-jel-coated if the origi**** coat has a lot of cobweb cracks. Sanding it off a reapplying is the only way to go.

As for the fenders, if you decide to jel coat, you'l have to sand the gl*** to give the jel coat something to stick to. However the end result of jel coating probably won't be any better than a skim coat of bondo and primer.

37 Ford headlights like those are perfect, looks like they should have been factory…...

  28. I know i will have to use lots of filler, i was just wanting to take every precaution so i dont get any cracking. I watched some gel coat videos on youtube last night (yes, my friday nights are that exciting).
those headlights look perfect. Ill do a quick search and see if i can find some locally, if not im going to mount the original units on the side of the cowl. Im running out of time, i have to have this hot rod finished as we plan on taking it to back to the 50's event this year.

  29. Maybe a pic might help put this in perspective...
