Teaser - 409 by indyjps posted Aug 5, 2010 at 11:48 AM 63 409 340 hp for numbers matching 63 ss build
I bought a '32 5w, and got sidetracked. It's a '65 truck block, .040 over, Ross 11 1/4 : 1 pistons.'61 335 HP 348 heads, pocket ported, bronze guides, BB screw in rocker studs, and good stainless valves. Crane "Thumper" cam I don't remember the specs right off hand. The headers started out as Speedway BBC fenderwells for a tri-5 Chevy cut and pasted to fit '09 flanges. Backed by a Super T10, and a '66 Chevelle 12 bolt with a spool for now. I have never even heard it run yet.. I want to work on it so bad, but the '32 has got to be done first..... Thanks loudbang for sizing the pics...
I stopped by motov8n's place yesterday to shoot the breeze and check out the 409. It's going to look killer once it's all put together!!
Well, fellas...i have to admit that this is my first time assembling an engine, but after doin a pile of research, this is the plan... Cylinders are .030 and it's a stock steel crank ground .020. i 'm goin with a hydraulic flat tappet Thumpr Comp cam with .512 intake and .498 exhaust valve lifts with a 107 lobe center. Two brand new non-ferrous Edelbrock heads with Crane Gold Race roller rocker arms and a dual-quad intake with two 500 CFM carbs are gonna sit on top. i hope You guys don't tell me that it's not a good set up because i already bought the parts haha! i am definitely excited to get it put together, but i gotta go outta town for work...but i'll be on it as soon as i get back!
I would have picked a different cam but if we all did the same thing we would all be married to the same gal. You will have a bunch fun with this 409.
Been doing a little history reading on the Ws. According to the Wiki, the combustion chamber design, quench area and spark plug location gives a wide power band with good low end. Super Chevy says it was a cost decision which allowed compression ratio changes without retooling the cylinder head castings. Hmm, they managed to change the small block compression with just piston changes.. So what was the real reason for this unique design? http://www.superchevy.com/features/sucp-0801-348-409-w-engines/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Big-Block_engine
The bottom one in post 15 is in this. All numbers matching, all casting dates right. Not mine, I just built the engine, I don't have the temperment to chase all the "correct" parts. The correct wheels are in his garage, along with SS and small hubcaps.
Were 409s noted for bearing problems? Back in the mid 60s, my dad drove a 63 chev tilt cab semi tractor with one. The rod bearings were good for about 20,000 miles. I know of 3 times that they rebuilt it, once with a new crank, thinking there was something wrong in the crank. After the third rebuild, his boss got rid of it.
Adding to my other post Here is the one i screwed together in its "home" in my old 62. The one that GM built i posted is the #s match motor to my 63 i'm building now. I can't help it...just love these damn things! And MOTOV8N, you've some nice stuff there. I was originally going to build a stroked 409 and use it in my 32, but the purchase of the original 409 63 changed all that. Long story that isnt worth getting into. Simply put that motor went into the 62 because i built a '09 clone out of it. Tony
i have no doubt that those 180 degree black/white wheel turn grey when ya get 'em spinnin fast enough!
Just took this photograph 8 minutes ago...just snowed up here in Canada, but this is what i plan on dropping mine into in the future
