This is the look you have to guard against. Really not this bad (what is) but when your trying to go against the tide or try something new it might not work. Really if you want to kinda blend in put the black top on but if you want to pop go white. Up to you.

Go to the photoshop thread and ask them to do renderings of rods with the thoughts you have so you can actually see them and make an informed decision.

Yes there it is and it doesn't look bad at all in fact it looks rather good. In fact real good. It all blends together real well. It's kinda good to walk by and look at and enjoy how everything just goes. If you want that kind of reaction do something like that. And you might be the kind of low key guy that wants to have that reaction to your rod.

I don't! I want people to come up and say "OH WOW IS THIS YOURS? I SPOTTED THIS FROM ACROSS THE FAIRGROUNDS" "I REALLY DON'T LIKE T BUCKETS BUT I LIKE YOURS" "IS THIS STEEL?" "WHAT ENGINE IS THAT" "OH WOW A CAD." "FOUR CARBS!" YADA,YADA,YADA. And sometimes they stay and talk for half an hour or more.

    Up to you.

  8. Sorry Missysdad, but Gary, take note, a very ugly "Street Rod has polluted the thread here above, so a few photo's of your truck when you are ready will be a-okay I would think.
Larry, don't even think about going purple on your blue Roadster pickup. I was going to suggest a dark blue approximately the same as the body colour or slightly darker for contrast. I have forgotten if you are building to a strict time line so if not, you can break away from the white top /tonneau cover. Does Rod Tops have a web page ?

  9. I was talking to Ted Brown a couple of years ago about this T Bucket and he was tell me that it was build by the driver and his brother using one of Ted's frames. It was one of the first to use a fuel injected Corvette engine. I would have to phone Ted again to get the name of the guys as I have forgotten. It is a early sixties car though and Ted actually told me where the photo was taken as that was the first MacDonalds in the LA area I believe.[IMG]

  10. Larry,
I'll reserve final judgement till I see the paint color, but I'm thinking the dark blue Hartz cloth top would look "Bitchin"!

Edit: Oop's, now I've done it! Gary's gonna yell at me, too! ;-D And I like white tops!

    Gary,
I'll be at the swap on Thursday setting up, but I gotta cut out around 4-4:30 as I teach skateboarding to kids Thursday nights through Portland Parks and Recreation.

    Whip,
I'll take a couple up close photos of the shifter boot either later tonight or tomorrow. It's a lot easier to make than it looks!

Vinyl convertible top material. WHITE okay and black too.
Actually my wife saved my ass on this one. My upholstery guy wanted to use a kinda leather look stuff. She said THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY USED IN THE"50s. Yes she shouts too.

  23. Heck, things moved along very smartly this morning as I viewed the latest posts and started typing, by time I posted it we had jumped to the next page so my comment about the ugly T got lost , it was the one with the purple top on a red to orange bodied T with cream trim. Just too much.
Larry ,that is exactly what I was thinking about for colour of your top. Thanks for the link too.
Yes and thanks to you Sir for the name Tom Booth as I remembered after I had gone off the site.

No top going on mine either, love the color on the all blue 26-27. That's what I want on my RPU when it needs a repaint.

  28. That is cool Graham and I am envious of your club giving out that type of plaque for their members. I'm a member of Early Irons Street Rods Inc. in Tauranga so we don't have meetings etc but have a membership of approximately 30 to 40 people from all over. I just may have to look at a local club to join sometime after I have the T back on the road.

In my humble opinion you can't go wrong by staying within the era you've chosen as the theme for your car when it comes to selecting paint and upholstery materials. For example if the theme is late '40s to early '50s hot rod you should choose from the paint colors and materials used on mainstream hot rods in the late '40s to early '50s. The research is simple, but one has to be careful not to find an anomaly and point to it as being mainstream and thus a good choice when in fact it is neither.

There are many hot rods that totally break this "rule" and are still great hot rods. But the ones that really take your breath away are the ones that are spot-on era correct.
