so I'm putting a small block Chevy in my model A .............. i know; that's really rare

my idea is to take regular OEM steel valve cover pair and put a different Oil filler cap and breather/vent and or raised ribs from some 50's or 60's covers.

then take the stamped lettered or script area from another set of covers, maybe a "Chrysler fire power", "powered by Ford", international, AMC, mercury, Packard etc... and use to make a one of a kind "what the ...... is that" set of valve covers like "powered by GMC"

    some of my ideas;

Seems like an awful lot of work, but if you have the time and the ability, go for it!

why not just put something other than a bellybutton engine in it?

    Do it its your project.

  5. Any emblem other than Chevy or GM, would seem like a poser to me. No different than the fake flathead valve covers on a chevy.

  6. I like the idea.
Maybe you could have something original stamped into metal, then weld it in, like, powered by Chevy, or depending on your sence of humour, bellybutton. I'd do bellybutton just for fun. :D

I did this to my Packard valve covers. It's the pot metal script from the fender. img66.JPG

I agree, it's not sitting with me well either. might be why I asked question to begin with.

here are some other ones I've been considering,
anyone know of another GM/Chevy stamped cover?

  9. Have to agree. I like being different, but this seems like being fake.

How about taking some aluminum valve covers and milling you name into them? Like the Iskendarian model T....

  11. Haha. I typed too slow. I don't have any ideas, but I'm glad you're looking for something different without lying. :)

I have always kicked myself for not getting a set of Studebaker script SBC covers when I saw them in an engine pile at a junkyard years ago.

There were some Pontiac script Chev valve covers used in Canadian Pontiacs in the fifties. Haven't seen any in years.

  15. Were the Canadian Pontiac/sbc covers staggered pattern or straight across? I've known these but haven't located any myself.

To the best of my knowledge, staggered pattern only

  17. The Studebaker/Chevy engines had stickers on the valve cover. They were not embossed with a Stude logo. Nothing special

  18. This would get more than one chuckle!
    Chebbie is another possibility
I did this, took a lot of time to get the die made. (by hand with files and a dremel)

how about finding some reversed stamp letters, if that makes sense, & embossing with something unique. not chev, ford, etc... but your last name, or something that has some meaning to you? then, it's not trying to fool someone into thinking it's something other than chev, but just making a statement. suppose if you were good enough w/ a wirefeed welder, you could "write" something on there.

  20. better idea for raised script would be something non automotive like: fridgidaire [gm owned], hoover, craftsman, diddeglazer etc..... that will keep them talking.

  21. I had a set of big block chev valve covers that were from Mercury Marine (I think) they were black crinkle paint with satin aluminum ribs, but in the center was a sunken rectangle that had a sticker in it. (easily removable) I'm sure that Mercury also used small blocks, so there might be something like that floating around somewhere. Put your own sticker in it.

  22. Small block Chevy in my truck has some plain chrome aftermarket covers, got a pair of '39-'40 Ford script emblems that go on the hood sides near the cowl. Put the emblems on teh plain valve covers. Engine is painted Ford flathead green. Created a cock and bull story (that many gullible people have bought) about the rare Ford experimental OHV engine that became the basis for the small block Chevy design.

Just paint a stock pair of covers with "If you don't like my bellybutton, turn me around and kiss my ass"

    Do something like this:

Spell anything you want on stock steel valve covers.

I love your basic idea. It will get people to ask you questions, and maybe if you're nice to them they will get interested in the hobby. Go for it somehow!

I cut the holes out with a piece offset and flipped them around to fit later heads

I wouldn't use another manufacturer name on the chevy covers. The ribbing from another set could be cool, you have to keep the joke going and do the entire engine as a mystery.

if you want to mess with people, cut the Chevrolet script out and weld it in backwards, tell people it was built on a monday.
Weld the top of LS engine valve covers to the bottom of Gen 1 small block covers tell'em they're experimental heads.

    lot of great ideas,

I'd like to make covers that are not recognizable at first, maybe just a couple letters and some ribs/contours... I'm heading to Spring Carlisle in acouple weeks, going to look for some used covers to cut up

thanks again for all the ideas
